If This Is Spring, I'd Hate To See Winter
More of the Theology of Alfred E. Newman

Fewer than half of young people in Spain consider themselves Catholic, a steep drop from a decade ago, says a new study. Here are a few of the low lights;

The report found, among other things, that "10 years ago, 77% of young people considered themselves Catholic; today, for the first time in history, they do not reach 50%."

The report's authors attribute this phenomenon to the fact that "young people do not find attractive models of religiosity."

Other causes mentioned by the report are "the growing secularization of society, political changes in a clearly secularist direction, and the mistrust that the Church arouses among young people."

Only 10% of young people say they are committed Catholics, as opposed to 20% who are characterized by religious indifference, agnosticism or atheism.

The rest, the report said, "is made up of a great mass of Spaniards who are identified, to a greater or lesser extent, with their condition of Catholics, but are characterized primarily by their passivity."

Everything noted above are prime examples of what the Spirit of Vatican II hath wrought.

The Spirit of Vatican II demanded that youth look beyond Catholicism for heroes (like Mohandas Gandhi and Martin Luther King). No Catholic role models equals no Catholic Heroes. Indifferentism won.

The Spirit of Vatican II demanded that Catholic countries (like Spain) renounce that Catholicism was the official State Religion. Secularization won.

The Spirit of Vatican II demanded that radical Ecumaniacs be placed in positions of power (in once Catholic countries like Spain). Religious indifference, agnosticism and atheism won.

The Spirit of Vatican II demanded that moral absolutes be replaced with the dictatorship of relativism. Religious passivity won.

Holy Father, if you're going to re-introduce Traditional Catholicism to the vast majority of the world's Catholics... you better hurry while we still have some Catholics left.

'Nuff said.

General Franco must be rolling over in his grave to say nothing of all the great Spaniards who spent centuries driving the Moors out of Europe and bringing the Cross to every corner of the world.

That said, I would be there are some flaws to that survey. Even in America with its liberal take on Catholicsm and not to deep Catholic roots most nominal Catholic teens even if they haven't been to church in years will still identifiy themselves as Catholic if pressed.

Well your protestantized catholicism sure aint turning people on either, so maybe us evil trads aren't the problem. Protestant siblings? The Bride of Christ has no siblings. They all are their own pope and they all contradict each other. But hey they have TV screens and rock bands and coffee cup holders!

What did you expect from "Catholic Caveman?"

CC gives us all another glowing example of Ecumaniacs In Action. Catholic Christian? *Yawn* Using that silly Catholic Christian tag to heretics only gives them an air of legitimacy.

And yet again, telling the truth seems to bother the more liberal minded. I guess it's easier going through life with your head in the sand. What was that I said about the Theology of Alfred E. Newman?

Oh, and speaking of obnoxious arrogance, I guess "shake the dust from your sandals"... "don't cast your pearls before swine"... and literally WHIPPING evil men away from the House of God were just more examples of obnoxious arrogance.

Sorry CC. Your brand of Roman Protestantism has been tried and found to be wanting.

FD and AO, as usual, excellent posts, guys!

Caveman, I'm going to take issue with your remark that "indifferentism won".

We haven't lost. The fight ain't over yet. You ain't dead, I ain't dead, and sure as Heaven, the Holy Spirit ain't dead.

We know this is a fight, but it's like watching Brett Hart wrestling; a long drawn-out struggle in which he barely avoids losing over and over again, ending in a sudden come-from-behind win for the good guy.

It's not how we finish the first lap of the race, but the last. We win in the end.

Paul,
Good point, but I think CSM is using irony to emphasize the current illneses plaguing the Church.

CC-
We're called to evangelize the world but maybe we also need to worry about cleaing up out own house being as so many of them are hardly "converted."

Criticizing everyone? No, just those who need it. Wanna bet St. Athanasius was called arrogant when he (quite correctly) labeled over half the bishops as heretics during the Arian heresy?

By the way, what kind of lay minister are you?

Correction: everyone is a Catholic. Most just don't know it yet, so show them!
