Outrage: Obama Administration Targets Military for Pay Reductions
President Barack Obama — who came to power with the help of government employee unions across the nation and has lavished on them hundreds of billions in stimulus funds to keep them on federal, state and local payrolls with no strings attached — is moving to cut spending on salaries for military personnel.
This weekend The Washington Post headlined story, "Pentagon Asking Congress to Hold Back on Generous Increases in Troop Pay,” disclosed that the Obama administration is “pleading” with Congress to give military personnel a much smaller increase in pay than lawmakers have proposed.
The Pentagon contends that Congress simply has been too generous with troops during the past decade.
In fact, lawmakers have lavished so much money on troops, according to the Post, that service members are now better compensated than workers in the private sector with similar experience and education levels.
For example, the military brass claims that an average sergeant in the Army with four years of service and one dependent would receive $52,589 in annual compensation, according to the paper. This figure includes basic pay, housing, and subsistence allowances, as well as tax benefits.
Meanwhile, a U.S. postal letter carrier, with no supervisory or hazardous duty, makes approximately $80,000 a year when all benefits are factored in.

That is devilishly iniquitous. There is not enough money in the whole country to adequately compensate those who put their lives on the line for the rest of us. On a different tack, G. K. Chesterton said once that the soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.
Maybe they should take the money away from the postal workers and give it to the military, then.

$52.6K is not that much money, either! The enemy is not the postal worker, although I think the private sector could do better with the mails than the U.S. Post office. Examples are Fed Express, United Parcel Service, etc. An additional advantage of privatization is that it will likely end junk mail as a paper form, although not the e-junk mail.
Correction: I have been informed privately by a good friend that privatization of the mail likely would not end junk mail. Apparently there is big bucks in it, although I can't see how.
Am hoping to FIRE some incumbent politicians, they take home way too much money for what THEY do. Their total lack of respect for the military is disgusting and intolerable.
Gee, maybe military personnel and their families deserve better compensation than their civilian counterparts. They commit their lives to be placed at risk, they suffer the hardships of family separation and anxiety (because a member’s life is at risk), and maybe we want to maintain a high caliber organization (like the one we have) of loyal and well-trained patriots. I’m not military and I don’t like paying taxes, but I have never had a problem with this part of our government; it is one area where we get far more than we pay for in return. Of course, if some mailman has to face a gauntlet of particularly fearsome Doberman Pinschers on a regular basis then I have no problem classifying his route as “hazardous” and giving him a gun and pay comparable to that of one of our brave service men and women. (But feel free to cut the Bureaucrat-in-Chief’s salary as much as you like).
Every member of the military--especfially those whose lives are on the line in defense of this country in warzones cannot receive enough pay--they get the short end of the stick all the time--cut back on defense budgets and the men and women on the line suffer the most--they should receive more than our president, congress and other government works for what they do and I for one want to see them receive adequate funding for their families back home too--they serve as well.
