Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A new study finds that women students at private, religious schools are not less likely than their counterparts at public schools to have an abortion. In fact, sociologist Amy Adamczyk published an article in the June issue of the Journal of Health and Social Behavior saying they are more likely.
Adamczyk, an assistant professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice and the Graduate Center, City University of New York, conducted the study.
While previous research has investigated the link between religion and abortion attitudes, fewer studies have explored religion's impact on abortion behavior. (That's simple... because religion has been replaced with Me-ism.)
"This research suggests that young, unmarried women are confronted with a number of social, financial and health-related factors that can make it difficult for them to act according to religious values when deciding whether to keep or abort a pregnancy," she said. (Like a baby will interfere with clubbing and getting high on weekends.)
"Religious school attendance is not necessarily indicative of conservative religious beliefs because students attend these schools for a variety of reasons," (Kind of like the rationale that I've posted about before - "At least my kids don't have to go to school with spics and niggers.") Adamczyk said. "These schools tend to generate high levels of commitment and strong social ties among their students and families, so abortion rates could be higher due to the potential for increased feelings of shame related to an extramarital birth."
Despite Adamczyk's finding that rates of reported abortions were higher for young women educated at private religious schools, the type of religious school was not a factor: Catholic schools had similar rates as other religious schools. (Why not? More than a few 'Catholic Schools' have become nothing more than Obama Youth training camps. Case in point: the posting I did concerning St Mary's "Catholic" School here locally that had Obama symbol face paintings for the kiddies at their recent Fall Festival. By the way, since when do Catholics celebrate seasons? More neo-paganism wrapped in a thin veneer of Catholicism.)
Results revealed no significant link between a young woman's reported decision to have an abortion and her personal religiosity, as defined by her religious involvement, frequency of prayer and perception of religion's importance. ('Religious importance'? I think that's a typo... they must have meant impotence. I've actually had graduates of the only diocesan Catholic High School, Cardinal Gibbons HS, tell me "I'm proud to be a Democrat and I'm voting for Obama. I don't care what you or the Catholic Church say!" When I queried these individuals where they learned such an attitude, the response was always "most of my teachers at Gibbons taught me to think for myself!" )
Despite the absence of a link between personal religious devotion and abortion, religious affiliation did have some important influence. Adamczyk found that conservative Protestants were the least likely to report having an abortion, less likely than mainline Protestants, Catholics and women with non-Christian religious affiliations.
Regarding the impact of the religious involvement of a woman's peers, Adamczyk found no significant influence. However, Adamczyk did find that women who attended school with conservative Protestants were more likely to decide to keep their baby if pregnant in their 20s than during their teen years. (Not that long ago, a girl in a Catholic School uniform meant "don't waste your time, guys. She's a virgin 'til marriage." Now it's synonymous with the word 'slut'. Ahhh... a progressive Catholic education!)

I have a post with a few comments on the state of Catholic schools in DBQ scheduled for tommorrow. I think you can guess how glowing it isn't. The status here is definitely in line with that study.
"perception of religion's importance"
The key word is perception. That is the big thing. As long as you have the outer veneer then whether you actually are doesn't matter. & since that is the message these kids see, they are taught that religion isn't important.

We should not be surprised. Nowadays, Catholic School=PRIVATE School. It comes with an air of entitlement which is completely uninviting for those struggling to meet bills yet would make sacrafices to send their children to a school that would nurture Catholic identity. Instead, the atmosphere mirrors...no make that MAGNIFIES what is valued by society.
You want to know how inviting the atmosphere at my area Catholic Schools are? I can compare it to the scene in American History X, when the main Skinhead Nazi character, trying to intimidate his mothers Jewish boyfriend, pulls up his shirt to show him his Swastika tattoo and says, "See that sign, it say's NOT WELCOME". Only, in the Catholic Schools in the Cape Fear area, that same sentiment is sent with a Lexus with an Obama sticker on the rear bumper.
See THAT sign, it says Catholics true to Catholic teachings NOT WELCOME!
This is not a scientifically valid statement based upon a valid statistical analysis, but it is my opinion based upon the Catholic H.S. my son and daughter attended, is that most parents, even many Church going ones, were thoroughly secularized. So were their high school children/studends. Also, it is quite an irony that the local public schools respected the parents' wishes vis-a-vis opting their children out of sex education, but not the Catholic schools. Accept the (sex) education or leave. How's that for Christian charity and respectin Church teaching that parents have the primacy of jurisdiction in secular and religious matters over their own children?
