Be Careful What You Ask For
With my luck, Bishop Burbidge will be his replacement

Excellent commentary from Phil Lawler of Catholic World News;

To restore credibility, Cardinal Mahony should resign
by Phil Lawler
special to CWNews.com

Jul. 17, 2007 (CWNews.com) - Five years ago Cardinal Roger Mahony was reportedly encouraging Vatican officials to ask for the resignation of Boston's Cardinal Bernard Law. Using the same logical arguments that the American prelate presented in 2002, the Vatican should now ask Cardinal Mahony himself to step down.

The sensational cost of the sex-abuse scandal for the Los Angeles archdiocese far exceeds the devastation in Boston. The $660-million legal settlement announced on July 16 is nearly five times the total of the financial damages in Boston. Combining that settlement with previous agreements, lawyers' fees, and other associated costs, the overall price to be paid by the faithful Catholics of Los Angeles will approach $1 billion.

And two other stories dovetail nicely into the above commentary.

The first is from The California Catholic Daily concerning the LA pay-out entitled "About $67 per Catholic, more than $1 million per parish".

Can you even IMAGINE your parish coming up with a million bucks?

And the second is from the Catholic News Service entitled "Black Catholics must work to keep urban schools open, speaker says".

Hey, it's up to all of us to work to keep Catholic schools open, urban or otherwise. But ya gotta admit... it sure would be a damn sight easier if our "leaders" weren't shelling out close to a BILLION dollars because they protected rapist "priests". Ya think?

I've long thought the proper penance, should such a priest have the humility to make a valid confession, would be to write each and every one of his victims, begging their forgiveness for the harm he did them, specifying the particulars.

Amen and amen!

How many parishes could remain open -- nationwide -- with just a portion of that money?

How many Catholic school could remain open -- or be built?

How many kids could be sent to Catholic school with that much money?

How many homes for unwed mothers could be funded, saving countless lives?

How many young men with valid vocations but limited means could be sponsored through seminaries?

There's about 74 diooceses in America. With that much money, 371,621 Latin-English pew missals could be sent to EVERY diocese.

Also, very interesting that after dragging out the case for years, in fact, for as long as he could, after being threatened with contempt of court more than once for all his phony delays, foot-dragging, failure to turn over subpoenaed records, and legal shenanigans by his cadre of high-priced lawyers, Mahoney finally agreed to settle the lawsuit on the day before the first of the hundred-plus cases was ready to go to trial, A trial, that would, not doubt, have seen the tainted Prince of the Church on the witness stand to answer question under oath about his part in covering up his knowledge and movement of known pedophile priests during his years as ordinary of two dioceses. Of course, he’d probably have invoked his Miranda rights and refused to testify.

On another note I still see prots and co. complaining in the local papers about the Pope's MP and restating what the Church has taught regarding heretics, uh I mean protestants not being churches; and they bringing up the usual, like Card. Mahoney protecting kiddie rapists.

I think they should follow St. Basil's instructions on how to deal with them -look it up- and Mahoney, Brown et al should be anathematized using the old ceremony where their hands are wiped with a glass shard.

Cavey,
I'm back! I've been on a construction project in the Far East and only now can take a break and add my thoughts...

The reason we have this current clergy sex scandle is due to two things:
1. Homosexual clergy.
2. Criminal cover-ups by so many of our vile, Protestant, post-Vatican II bishops.

Remember, the John Jay study looked back almost 50 years. What did they find? 81% were between male clergy and teenage BOYS (not teenage girls, small girls or small boys). Why? Simple. The post-Vatican II Church opened the flood gates to queer men, ended the teaching of Thomistic theology and Catholic moral theology, and "bent over" to the New Age.

Given His Eminence's self-professed stance on poverty, one wonders how much 1,000,000,000.00 would have gone to alleviate same within his jursidiction.

I image he could have fed just about everyone in LA and given them a job, and a Latin missal and music training etc etc
