Happy Hard Hat Riot Day!
Construction Workers, Stock Exchange Suits, New York's Finest.... just two words; HELL YES!!
Hat Tip to Relapsed Catholic
"A lot of us are World War II vets and fathers and purple hearts. We're from a generation that believes the flag over everything." (Electrician Morty Grutman, quoted in the New York Post, May 9, 1970)
36 years ago today, communist led anti-war hippie scum (better known as The Great Unwashed) staged themselves at the George Washington statue on Wall Street and were waving Communist Viet Cong flags and burning, urinating and defecating on American flags, just like what had recently happened in Washington DC.
New York city construction workers (better known as The Hard Hats) had had enough. They proceeded to charge the hippie base camp and set up American flags, then pursued and thumped the living shit out of said Great Unwashed. What happened next, no one expected... the construction workers were unexpectedly joined by white collar office workers (better known as The Suits) from the New York Stock Exchange. The NYSE literally emptied as Suits fought shoulder to shoulder along side the Hard Hats.
Mayor John Lindsay ordered that all flags on City buildings be lowered to half mast due to the Kent State shootings, which the construction workers of New York overwhelmingly opposed. They threatened to overwhelm City Hall unless the flag was raised to full mast, which it was... by the construction workers themselves.
In an other unexpected turn of events, 150 NYPD officers assigned to City Hall didn't interfere while the Hard Hats and Suits taught the Great Unwashed a thing or two about manners, decorum, and patriotism. As the American flag was raised to full staff over City Hall, the construction workers asked Police Officers remove their riot helmets in respect. They did.
The Hard Hat Riots were followed by a series of pro-war rallies in New York almost every day during May. These rallies culminated in a large Wednesday, May 20, 1970, rally. Over 100,000 hard hats, stock brokers and other workers peacefully marched through the streets of downtown New York City. The rally was organized by the local New York City construction workers union to show support for President Nixon and the Vietnam War.
Funny, schools never teach about this.

Funny, schools never teach about this.

Wow! I was in the ninth grade then. I vaguely remember hearing about that.
"Funny, schools never teach about this."
They should, and that this is how you deal with commies!
Working class NYers (Brooklyn, Queens, S.I.) never gave into the hippy crap of the 60's. If you had long hair in Bensonhurst, or Ozone Park, you better be wearing sneakers.
Thanks again Kev for the heads up about this event that took place. I'm still proud to be a hardhat, though it's harder to get anything done with the new generation of politically correct, kinder, gentler Mary's clogging up the site.
Nothing like beating a tree hugging malcontent over the head with his own Birkenstocks....of course you'd be publicly lambasted and indicted in todays atmosphere where "understanding and acceptance" is slowly undermining the status quo and work ethic instilled by the generations before us.
Since when did everyone become a victim? Is this a new profession? Or do you just whine and rage against the machine and expect to be excused for not holding up your end of the bargain. All I have to say is, "Here's a quarter, call someone who cares"
Padres are still looking unbeatable some days, anemic the others. Wonder if someone is going to step up in this weak division to take the lead?

Schools never teach that...because by May the schools were out on the National Student Strike. Campuses all over the country were having "peace classes" and demonstrations of their own.
I NEVER heard of this. Not even while in the military!
Mel Gibson's father won a bunch of money on Jeopardy so that he could move his family to Australia so they wouldn't get drafted. Does that make him a communist?
Anon,
Sorry, you're wrong. dad moved to Australia because he was out of work, and he was invited by family members who lived in Australia, that they had found him work there.
Also, Australia was an allied nation during the Viet-Nam War. Yes... Aussies were fighting in 'Nam as well.
Kinda blows your liberal internet myth outta the water, huh?
Nothing I like better than working-class Tories. They are a *complete* enigma, and a source of unending frustration to the left.
You know, I'll say this here, then I am going to say it in a proper post over on my blog.
The first flag I ever saw, had some stars and stipes on it. My parents put me in front of the TV (with them) to watch a certain Messrs Aldrin and Armstrong land on the moon. I was 5 months old. They told me when I when they found out I was going to marry an American (if you can call girls from Massachusetts American ;-0) and come over here.
I was stunned.
Anyway, the point is, when I saw that picture of those traitors, especially the black flag / t-shirt I mentally reached for my rifle...
You've just crossed the line.
Dear Vir Speluncae Catholicus:
Sorry buddy but you are wrong. http://www.nndb.com/people/988/000031895/
This one of MANY websites confirm that Hutton left the US for his kids to avoid the Draft.
Also since the Gibson's are American, Australia could never conscript them into service in Vietnam.
Kinda blows that conspiracy of yours doesn't it
Anon,
You mean credible sources like nndb.com?
The very same nndb.com that makes a point of listing someones "sexual orientation" on their posted biographies?
The very same nndb.com that gives all the inside dirt with their link to the story concerning how "Lonely Lindsay Lohan says she hates to sleep alone"?
The very same nndb.com that has me all in a tizzy because they "reported" that, quote; "Busta Rhymes is arrested again". Golly, how WILL I ever sleep tonight?
But I tell ya, Anon... you keep cruising these queer-friendly internet versions of the National Inquierer for your "facts", OK?
You're making it too easy to blow you and your silliness outta the water.
Sheesh... fish in a barrel.
I figured you would say something like that so let me put you on the spot. What are YOUR CREDIBLE sources for the reason why Hutton Gibson left the USA? Also the point, lost in all of this is that one isn't a Communist to protest against the Vietnam War.

http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2004/02/15/1076779837879.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mel_Gibson
How about these for sources?
Pretty arrogant, aren't you Anon. Especially seeing your visiting someone elses blog. Obviously, you think this is some type of public forum.
But I enjoy dissecting you. So I'll humor you for the time being.
How about http://www.answers.com/topic/hutton-gibson
With that said, there is not one retrievable fact you have cited that states that Hutton Gibson took off to Australia so his sons wouldn't be drafted.
By the way, when the family emmigrated to Australia, Mel Gibson was a whopping TWELVE years old. Not even close to draft age.
There are, however, retrievable facts that clearly show that he WAS injured badly on the job. There are retrievable facts that a lawsuit was won by Hutton Gibson against the NY Railway and he won. There are retievable facts that show that he couldn't find a job here in The States, but he did have family in Australia that would assist him finacially.
It is sad that the SMH religion writer and the folks at Biography.com bought into the internet myth. As far as Wikipedia is concerned... aren't they the same folks who were recently discredited because their "Catholic expert in residence" falsified all his credentials? Sure is.
Also, there is a VERY hard-core anti-Hutton Gibson site (http://www.adelaideinstitute.org/Dissenters/gibson7.htm), and even they state that Hutton Gibson realized that his sons could be drafted while living in Australia, but he was banking that the Aussie govt would be more lenient than the Americans. But the bottom line is, Hutton Gibson knew darn good and well that his sons could have been drafted by the Aussie govt, and sent to Viet-Nam.
But you keep trying, Anon.
Also the point, lost in all of this is that one isn't a Communist to protest against the Vietnam War.
But it sure helped. Ever heard of the Weather Underground... or the Communist Party of the USA... or the telegram of congratulations that the anti-war scum rcv'd from communist leaders in Hanio during the war?
By the way, did you notice the picture of the Chinese indivudual in the initial pic I posted? I don't think he was the owner of a dry cleaners... do you? And that flag that they're waving? That's the COMMUNIST Viet-Cong battle flag.
Stop defending Communist agitators/supporters.
Oh man... sad, sad. I found out the seemingly spontaneous action by "hard hats" was orchestrated by some former military personnel working at the WTC site, ornamental and structural iron workers, and some NY CIA agents working to counter the SDS types sowing dissent. Sad how actual patriotism is mis-used by the unscrupulous idealogues and demagogues.
