BREAKING NEWS!! Cardinal Recognizes Obvious...
Film at 11
Here's just a bit;
The prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy, Cardinal Claudio Hummes, called on the faithful in Latin America to reach out to fallen away Catholics who have joined other Christian denominations.
"In recent years," he continued, "the Church in America has lost 1% of its faithful each year." Therefore, he encouraged Catholics to create new initiatives of evangelization in the region where almost half of the world’s Catholics live. "Perhaps the future of worldwide Catholicity is at risk," he said.
Among the reasons Catholics leave the Church to join other Christian denominations is "the moral relativism imported from Europe and introduced into Latin America, especially by local leaders, the mass media and intellectuals," the cardinal said, citing the recent legalization of abortion in Mexico as an example.
Your Eminence, that "moral relativism" that you speak of, is better known as "The Spirit of Vatican II", and here in The Lair, we call it "Roman Protestantism". But don't fret, Your Eminence... the solution is almost here.
All will be fine when Catholics get back in the habit of being Catholics.

Yes, he is understating the problem as I have written about before.
A great fear is that they will be totally lost: i.e. once they leave the Chuch to go and hang with the pentacostals etc, they soon discover (as the pentacostals themselves admit to having to consitently use emotive techniques and recruit to offset their massive turnover...their analysis, not mine) there is nothing there, and hence move from simply being disenchanted with the Catholic Church, to being disenchanted with "Jesus generally" and then they become quite angry and bitter.
They leave the Church because the Mass has been denuded of all sense of Other and, at the same time, they do not want to be reminded of how bad their lot is now (what, are they stupid?!) they want to be reminded of the Hope they have and the blessed reward in store if they persevere to the end.
And present to them a Church that also LOOKS and SOUNDS Catholic, lest be confused with the 30,000 prot groups. That'll give them something different and "new".
Cardinal Hummes is a Liberation Theology sympathizer. The sorrowful state of the Church in Latin America and the continuous success of pentecostals over there are due mostly to the marxism-infected catechesis which fed peasants and factory workers for generations. Liberation Theology, although anathematised by Rome years ago, is still a fetid cancer in the Latin American Church and Cardinal Hummes was indeed a promoter of protestantism in Brazil because Liberation Theology's focus is on the "hic et nunc" and not life everlasting, the supernatural, sin as an offense against God etc and the people who did not find true spirituality in the Church looked for it outside among the protestants - and that, as Vickers-Buckley rightly points out, is just a first step towards final apostasy.

Anon,
Just something to consider.... possibly all those prayers for the conversion of the heart for the good Cardinal are finally paying off?
I surely hope so.
Theophilus
