Why Was The Oath Against Modernism Done Away With?
...and should it be brought back?
Not that long ago, every single Catholic priest on the face of the earth was required to take The Oath Against Modernism. But what the heck is Modernism anyway?
Essentially, Modernism believes that everything, old, traditional, orthodox, and conservative is useless and should be done away with.
The Modernists themselves say "Our religious attitude is ruled by the single wish to be one with Christians who live in harmony with the spirit of the age".
In the Encyclical "Pascendi", Pope St. Pius X says that modernism embraces every heresy. And that Modernism is the synthesis of all heresy. Powerful stuff, indeed.
The pre-Vatican II Church also adhered to the notion that "The avowed modernists form a fairly definite group of thinking men united in the common desire to adapt Catholicism to the intellectual, moral and social needs of today". Sheesh... that sounds like most Catholic priests present day. Maybe that's why The Church is in so much trouble.
Here's the Oath itself. Read it carefully. It's as hard hitting as a just about anything The Church can come up with.
One of the bitter fruits of "The Spirit of Vatican II" was that priests are no longer required to take the Oath. Wouldn't it be nice if all priests did? Think of the changes that would take place.
Then we would see a real Springtime of The Church.

Unfortunately for the thesis, every Council Father at Vatican 2 had taken this solemn oath. There is no word, or book, or oath that will restrain a heart bent on wickedness. (Not to imply that was the state of the conciliar father's hearts) But, it would make it easier to prosecute the modernist heretics, so that would be good.
Pan, I said Spirit of Vatican II. Not the Council itself.
My $0.02,
I think anyone receiving the sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Orders should have to take this oath. I wonder if the priests, bishops, and religious of the SSPX take this oath?
GG,
From what I've read, all SSPX priests take The Oath prior to Ordination
Vir, Yep, you did say "Spirit", I guess I should have been more clear in saying that those folks who abolished the Oath (Pope Paul VI?) and those who made the "Spirit of Vatican II" the wonder-source of all the BS that is modern Amchurch all took the oath. So, I'm not sure making more people take it would help, unless "they" are willing to enforce it. There are a lot of good rules and rubrics out there now, but you'd never know it by how people live. But I am in agreement overall with the idea. Imagine a Church where the Priests uphold Catholic teaching- Now that would be a sight greater than an army with banners!
