Dateline: LONDON - Bishop Patrick O'Donoghue of the Diocese of Lancaster in northern England has apologized to churchgoers after discovering the diocese had fallen into debt to the tune of nearly $18 million (10.2 million pounds). The bishop admitted he had allowed the diocese's centralized bureaucracy to "eat up" money belonging to parishes and restricted funds. He admitted this was contrary to canon law.
Comment: When the barbarians succeeded in hastening the fall of the Roman Empire, they went back to their barbaric ways, leaving the former Roman cities and towns without any laws, law enforcement, or civil institutions. Anarchy resulted and the populace turned to the only organization that had the power and influence to help them -- the Catholic Church. Unfortunately, this led to the rise of popes and bishops living like feudal lords (power corrupts). Is that what's happening to some of our bishops again? The evidence seems to indicate many of them don't give a hoot about the patrimony of the Church gathered over years and decades from the sweat and generosity of parishioners. Alas, some are more concerned about building new cathedrals as monuments to their egos. Luke 12:15.
Dateline: SAN DIEGO - A local Catholic church will offer a traditional Celtic Mass on St. Patrick's Day. The Celtic Mass, composed in 1966, was the first Mass written in Gaelic, the Irish language. Two native Irish priests will concelebrate in honor of Ireland's patron saint.
Comment: Interesting that the bishop of San Diego will permit a "traditional" Gaelic Mass but has little sympathy for the traditional Latin Mass celebrated by the universal church for over 500 years. In San Diego, the Latin Mass is only permitted in the chapel of the local Catholic mausoleum, helping all "traditionalists" to understand what the early Christians must have felt like in the catacombs. In fairness, the bishop did recently authorize two Latin Masses per Sunday due to the increasing hordes of young families that throng the chapel every Sunday.
Dateline: LOS ANGELES - Archbishop Mahoney has gone back to court, again, in what lawyers for the victims of sexual abuse are calling another delaying tactic.
Comment: So much for wanting to heal the wounded.
