Cardinal Egan Out Of The Closet?
A Prince of The Church part of the Lavender Mafia?
Normally, I don't give much credence to wild accusations, unless one is going to back up bold talk with even bolder actions. As we use to say in The Corps... if you're gonna talk the talk, you better be ready to walk the walk.
Looks like that's exactly what Father Robert Hoatson is doing. In a lawsuit filed against Cardinal Egan, Father Hoatson claims; Egan is "actively homosexual," and that he has "personal knowledge of this." His suit names two other top Catholic clerics in the region as actively gay. Albany bishop Howard Hubbard and Newark archbishop John Myers.
Hoatson claims is that, as leaders of a church requiring celibacy and condemning homosexuality, actively gay bishops are too afraid of being exposed themselves to turn in pedophile priests. The bishops' closeted homosexuality, as the lawsuit states, "has compromised defendants' ability to supervise and control predators, and has served as a reason for the retaliation."
Hoatson realizes what he's up against. "I stopped and I thought long and hard about these allegations," he says. "It's time the church confronts this dysfunction. I couldn't do this outside of filing a lawsuit. The only thing the church responds to is negative publicity or a lawsuit. If I kept trying to do this within the system, I would be gone."
Sure does look like Father Hoatson is walking the walk.

As I've written on my own blog, believing all that the Catholic Church teaches on faith and morality certainly puts us in a minority. But is that minority group so small that we can't even get our bishops, our cardinals from that group?
Must our Church recruit as its leaders men who don't accept and practice all the Church's own teachings?
It is seriously getting me down. What sort of Church is this?
What sort of Church is this?
The kind that needs strong men like Pope Benedict, Father Hoatson, and you, Paul, to rescue her from those that would rape Holy Mother The Church.
Nothing new, alas. Cardinal Spellman was homosexual. It has been said that the conflict between Fulton Sheen and His Eminence sprang from Sheen's discovery of his superior's activities...
Dave,
What's your source documentaion for the accusation against Cardinal Spellman?
And even if it is true... it was wrong then, it's wrong now. Also, then, it was a rarity. Now, it the norm in some diocese.
Cardinal Spellman? I don't believe it. As for Fr. Hoatson, he might be right but apparently he has some issues of his own that make me leery of his story.
One more thing, my mom was a hotel maid for 25 years in Washington DC. The hotel was in the heart of the gay community. Without getting gross on you, my mom has seen some things that would make your stocmach turn. She can now walk into a room and instantly tell if a gay couple has had sex in there. If Bishop Egan's housekeeper testifies in court and says he's not gay I'll believe her.
Yuck. Your mom's experience probably counted against her purgatory time.
Paul, just this guy...
"Must our Church recruit as its leaders men who don't accept and practice all the Church's own teachings?"
I am agreeing with you. I am confused repeatedly at the findings that good orthodox men applying for seminary or turned away. We are then left with a church having to withstand blow after blow against the Her. (horrible pun NOT intended)
Aretakis has a reputation for talking a lot and failing to walk at all.
That's not to say that this suit is without merit--but it's not time to "buy in."
Meyers? That's a bit of a stretch.
I'm going on Michael Dubruiel's mention of it (Spellman's alleged homosexuality) some years ago, based on his research But until I can find the sources and talk to one local authority on Archbishop Sheen (Thomas C. Reeves), I'm going to alter my statement to "reputed to be homosexual",apologize for shooting from the hip without presenting evidence first, and pray to almighty God that my previous post was entirely wrong.
OK...FWIW (and judge this as you may), here's one citation. I'll try to follow up with Dr. Reeves this weekend.
