Maybe Hassan should sit in a cell with a TV showing the day to day lives of the people he murdered ... over and over and over ... year after year after year, decade after decade after decade.

But then that might have no effect on him at all, for those defenseless people, coworkers and patients, whom he cowardly shot no doubt involved him in the daily routine of small talk about their lives, children, hopes, dreams, faith in goodness prevailing in the world.

Solzhenitzen, the great author who spent twenty years in a Soviet Gulag, wrote that the short timers sent to the Siberian slave labor camps were the murderers and thieves with two year sentences, and that the political and ideological and religious people were given the lengthy eight year terms, often compounded.

Which category is Hassan, who is both a murderer and a political/religious/ideological type?

But, why would the old Soviet system hand out short terms to murderers while the west deals them severe terms such as twenty to life, or execution?

Does this say something about non-Christian values such as life is cheap and ideology is everything?

I think it's something to reflect on ... why is individual life so cheap outside Catholicism?
