At least when the Obamas met the Pope, Michelle wore a black dress and black veil, instead of the splashy, trashy stuff she wears to other solemn occasions.

With Japan, the society at least includes bowing as a universal sign of respect. I hate to defend him any, but here he's not so out of line. Yes, with King Hussein, it disgusting and makes a mockery of his position and nation. With Japan, I'd need to see video to be convinced.

News Flash: After extensive research i have the real poop about the Obama bow which will be revealed in a post on my blog this Thursday. (Although I may have just given everyone a clue as to what it is about.)
I may be a staunch conservative, but I'm actually going to give Obama the benefit of the doubt on this one. Firstly, it is culturally appropriate and respectful. I don't view it as a sign of submission, but one of respect. My research indicates that Nixon actually bowed to Hirohito, which I find VERY surprising considering that Nixon lived through the Second World War, and the controversial reputation Hirohito had. (Historians haven't come to a final judgement on him yet.) What I do have a problem with is the lack of consistency. If he bows to the King of Saudi Arabia and the Emperor of Japan, he better damn well do likewise for the Holy Father.
Where are Obama's protocol people? Oh, wait, protocol is a bourgeois thing, so no protocol to follow even if it makes you look like a sissy.
Seriously, there's no problem with a slight blow, but culturally speaking, the lower the "bower" the lower the status.
These are only static pictures that do not show how the people were moving. It reminds me of a couple of old songs: 1. Shake your tailfeathers, Baby; and 2. the Limbo, although he seems to have it backwards or upside down or something. It's definitely not the Lindy Hop. Wait a minute, I recall seeing Tina Turner and also Janice Joplin doing that to the microphone in their concerts.
