New statistics show U.S. Catholics increase in numbers
Washington D.C., Jun 5, 2009 / 02:57 am (CNA).- The 2009 Official Catholic Directory has released new statistics on the Catholic population. The directory shows that there are 68.1 million Catholics in the United States, an increase of about one million from the previous year which maintains Catholics as 22 percent of the U.S. population. Suffice it to say, this article just gives all the rosy numbers, like the number of new parishes throughout the nation. But nary a word of the vast number closed down/combined.
And then we have this band-aid for a sucking chest wound;
Vatican laments drop in confessions
VATICAN CITY – A Vatican official is lamenting that many faithful no longer confess their sins, and says some confuse a psychologist's couch for a confessional booth.
Archbishop Mauro Piacenza has told Vatican Radio the sacrament of penance has been experiencing a "deep crisis" for decades. Piacenza, an official for the Vatican office on clergy, says fewer people distinguish between good and evil, and as a result don't go to confession.
The archbishop said in the interview Tuesday that if faithful don't have a sense of sin, they might "confuse" confession with "the couch of a psychologist or a psychiatrist."
He says the Vatican plans to publish this year a kind of handbook on confession to drum up enthusiasm among Catholics toward the sacrament. OF COURSE they don't have a "sense of sin"! Sin, hell, damnation --- all so politically incorrect and user unfriendly. When was the last time a Novus Ordo parish priest consistently preached on any of those three subjects? Hell, everyone's got the notion that Jesus "loves 'em just the way they are", and there's no need to even try to change all those inconvenient "human imperfections that make us uniquely us" (otherwise known as sin.)
And you've GOT to be kidding me. A handbook? Well, we've got so many shitty priests running around that don't even believe in their own priesthood, what do you expect?
You know, I think that's why the Marine Corps is so successful. Accountability and leadership doesn't begin with the Platoon Commander, Company 1st Sergeant, or Battalion Commander. It begins with that 19-20 year old Fire Team Leader.
I trained my Marines to know that it was their team leader that was held accountable for everything that went right AND WRONG in his team. And that principle has worked amazingly well for over 200 years.
And that's what the Vatican needs to realize. It isn't up to members of the Curia or even diocesan bishops to unscrew the de-Catholicization of the Catholic Church.
It begins with our parish priests. And more often than not, they're the culprits.

Esp when they tell you that a sin is not sin. Or only schedule confessions for a 1/2 hr or so on Sat afternoon (if then) & don't always show.
Need I go on.
Of course, we do have the 1 exception across the river. But he is the exception that proves the rule.

As one that started out as a some-time young catholic, and moved into Charismatic Catholic, to Protestantized, back (due to my families prayers) into staunch traditional catholic, I can see the case of the priests not standing on traditional teachings, but the tickling of the ears of the modernistic appealing sheep.

That handbook could be useful for beating people over the head ;)
One time a long time ago I went to confession to my pastor to confess fornication. He told me to buy condoms. I never went to him again - and split from the woman.
