Is This True?
Or just another internet hoax?
There's another e-mail floating around asking the musical question "What did Hoover, Truman, and Eisenhower have in common?" (Click here to read the original e-mail.)
The bottom line is that all three deported millions of illegal aliens who were a drain on the economy and taking jobs from Americans.
I thought the possibility existed that this may yet another jingoistic e-hoax... until I looked into it.
From Wikipedia; In 1929, President Hoover authorized the Mexican Repatriation Program. To combat rampant unemployment, the burden on municipal aid services, and remove people seen as usurpers of American jobs, the program was largely a forced migration of an estimated 500,000 Mexicans and Mexican Americans to Mexico. The program continued through 1937. Here's some info from The Harry S Truman Library & Museum; 154. Special Message to the Congress on the Employment of Agricultural Workers from Mexico
July 13, 1951
To the Congress of the United States:
The presence of these illegal workers has a seriously depressing effect on wages and working conditions in farm areas throughout the southwest. The standards of living and job opportunities of American farm workers are under constant downward pressure. Thousands of our own citizens, particularly those of Latin descent, are displaced from employment or forced to work under substandard conditions because of the competition of these illegal immigrants. And from The Dwight D. Eisenhower Library & Museum; Various groups urged the U.S. Government to curb this illegal migration. Critics claimed that the illegal aliens depressed wages, lowered living standards, increased crime and otherwise contributed to social problems in the United States. In 1954-55, the Eisenhower Administration endeavored to round up large numbers of these Mexican aliens and deport them back to Mexico. It worked then, it can work now. And while I'm at it, what's this garbage about "Comprehensive Immigration Reform"? The only damn thing that needs "reforming" is our national policy of being gutless wimps who refuse to enforce our own laws.
Or just another internet hoax?

Exactly, VSC, even though the system is broken, let's start by enforcing the laws that are on the books before we even attempt to change anything. (Which if we enforce the laws, nothing needs to be changed)
You'll be happy to know that the current immigration system was designed by Ted Kennedy! (/sarcasm)
Kennedy, essentially, determined to reduce Western-culture immigrants to the US and increase Eastern-culture immigration (India, primarily.) There are some other malevolent little quirks in his program as well.
ANYHOO, the current cap on Mexican immigrants is 144K/year. I think we can agree that the number is far too low, particularly if we simply reduce the number of non-Western-culture immigrants to balance any change.
If we were ever to get serious about deporting illegals, we would have to shoot 3/4 of this country's lawyers first.
This is an easy solution.
Put a fine of $1,000,000 to any company or person that hires an illegal immigrant. They have one mistake and the second time it is full fine. It is up to the employer to figure out how to make sure they are hiring legal citizens. The person who is caught if using false ID, they also get a long term in jail of say 25 years with each of them sentenced to doing jobs that no American wants to pay for their keep.
Give a reward of 25% of the fine to anyone that reports an illegal being hired that proves true. The mexicans who are here legally can make a fortune ratting out those who they know to be illegal.
Then pass a law that says any illegal here committing a crime will go to jail for double the time or more.
In 6 months the problem is over and we haven't spent a dime of tax money to take care of it. The businesses that need labor that no american wants can get cheap labor paying the government the expense of housing these criminals in return for their labor. No more money flow to Mexico.
When the flow is zero, then look at immigration reform that works to supply labor for those jobs that truly no American wants.
