Post-Notre Shame Thoughts
God bless those graduates who boycotted the event
There is no doubt BO wants to be re-elected. To do that, he will again need the Catholic vote. More than one writer was predicting -- before the speech -- that BO is trying to drive a wedge between the politically liberal Catholics and the leadership of the Church, i.e. pastors, bishops, and Rome. (I'm sure the resent survey that shows --for the first time -- that 51% of Catholics now disapprove of abortion, set chills down his spine. The fact that Catholics are starting to again think like Catholics probably puts (should I say it?) the fear of God in him.
So, he wants to CONTINUE to raise himself up as the new Messiah. BO urged the graduating class of Notre Dame to be aware that the challenges before them "require that we remake our world to renew its promise; that we align our deepest values and commitments to the demands of a new age." In other words, align your loyalty to the him rather than Christ, His Church, the Pope, etc.
Regarding the bishops, 79 of them actually went public in denouncing Notre Shame. I am going to guess that in some diocese, if the ordinary went public, his auxiliary may not have. So maybe the figure would actually be closer to 100. Folks, that's less than a third of our total bishops!
For the two-thirds of cowards or actually anti-Catholic undercover operatives, I offer the following:
Everyone who knows what is the right thing to do and doesn't do it commits a sin. -James 4:17
Not only for every idle word but for every idle silence must man render account. -St. Ambrose
