Another "Catholic" College Has Trouble Understanding Catholic Teaching
And so does their local bishop
It's the Dominicans turn. Interesting happenings at their Providence College in Rhode Island. Here's the article from The Cardinal Newman Society;
Tancredo's talk was being organized by Youth for Western Civilization.
Providence College in Rhode Island has rejected the request from student group Youth for Western Civilization to bring former congressman Tom Tancredo to campus for a talk. Providence spokesman Pat Vieira said that Bishop Thomas J. Tobin’s views on immigration contrasted sharply with those of Tancredo.
“The Bishop of Providence… is a member of the college’s Board of Trustees. If a similar request to host a speaker on this topic is made in a future semester, the college will encourage and facilitate a format that allows for multiple points of view to be expressed,” said Vieira.
Terry Gorman, executive director of Rhode Islanders for Immigration Law Enforcement stated in response, “This college allowed Senators [Ted] Kennedy and [Sheldon] Whitehouse to speak, and they are virulently pro-abortion. That goes against Church teaching, but they were invited to campus.” As I've pointed out in the past, the official teaching of the Catholic Church is quite different from that of Bishop Tobin's. He calls for a "moratorium" against on immigration raids in Rhode Island. But as I've pointed out in the past, #2241 of the Catechism states;
Political authorities, for the sake of the common good for which they are responsible, may make the exercise of the right to immigrate subject to various juridical conditions, especially with regard to the immigrants' duties toward their country of adoption. Immigrants are obliged to respect with gratitude the material and spiritual heritage of the country that receives them, to obey its laws and to assist in carrying civic burdens. Hold on... Tancredo actually advocates exactly what the official teaching of The Church is, but both this Dominican college and the Bishop of Providence advocate that legitimate government not only ignore the legitimate 'juridical conditions', but they also expect the immigrants to disregard obeying the laws of the nation they are now live in?
Some one's way out of step... and it sure as hell ain't Tom Tancredo.

What is so hard for me to understand is when a bishop comes out saying something like this that is clearly wrong, why there is not a mechanism for this to be changed. Seems like if the vatican had a job, it would be to correct the bishops when the lie or distort Church teaching.
First of all, the group Youth of Western Civilization is not an official organization on campus as recognized by the Student Congress so no matter who it is that they wanted to bring to campus to speak, they wouldn't have had authorization to use campus facilities. Secondly, yes, Senators Ted Kennedy and Sheldon Whitehouse have spoken on campus, but their speeches did not center around the abortion issue. They were sepaking about voter registration among other topics. If they had wished to speak about a topic with which the church disagrees, the College would have ensured that a forum for dialogue took place where both sides of the issue could be presented and discussed. This is consistent with the quote listed above by College Spokesperson Robert Viera. When people have issues that they are passionate about they're so quick to strengthen their argument in anyway possible that they pass judgment without all the facts. Having an opinion based on anything other than all the facts, to me, sounds a lot like ignorance.
Greta, IMO the correction has to come from the bottom up. Let the offering plate return empty too many times and the bishops start to pay attention.
The Vatican can't/won't help, they're concerned with the worldwide Church. As an example, that would include numbskull bishops in third world countries openly living with their lovers of either sex. Stacked besides garbage like that, the likes of Providence's Bishop is small potatoes.
If Catholics who are American want their bishops to conform to Catholic teaching we have to hit them where it'll hurt. Last time I checked, writing a letter to the chancery office informing them of your money going somewhere else due to the shenanigans of the bishop won't get you excommunicated.
What'll they do, put up a wanted poster on all diocesan churches?
Now I'm glad Tobin was not assinged to New York!
JD,
What difference does it make if this organization is "official"? I keep hearing the apologists for baby-butchers rationalize their invitations to such as 'a free exchange of thoughts and ideas'. It would seem that rationale doesn't apply to conservatives. You comment in this specific isn't ignorance, it's arrogant stupidity on your part.
You also tap-dance around baby killer politicians being innvited to "Catholic" schools because they didn't specifically speak in favor of abortion. If you took 10 seconds to research this, you would clearly see that the directive is that Catholic institutions are not to give said baby killers a platform from which to speak. You comment in this specific isn't ignorance, it's arrogant stupidity on your part.
It's blatantly obvious that you made any comments concerning Tancredo being fully in line with the Teachings of The Catholic Church. You comment in this specific isn't ignorance, it's arrogant stupidity on your part.
It's also blatantly obvious that you've failed (yet again) to mention that both PC and the Bishop of Providence are out of line wit the Teachings of The Catholic Church. You comment in this specific isn't ignorance, it's arrogant stupidity on your part.
JD, you have zero credibility. To put it bluntly, you're so full of shit, I can smell you from here.
I certainly hope you enjoyed posting here... it's your last.
