It was Sheen's book "God and Intelligence" (based on his PhD thesis, ca. 1927) that brought this wretch back home into the holy fold that is Rome. I still remember how I felt after reading it - like being kicked in the face. And those eyes of his, they burned like Christ's. An intellectual giant he was and, hopefully soon, he will be canonized. -TH2
I had the distinct pleasure of seeing him in person twice.
Here is a man who spoke the truth, called sinners to repent & represented what a Bishop should be.
& let's not forget, he was a prophet too as he warned us of where we were heading. In the years after Vatican II, the Pectoral Cross he wore was a silver one that he got at a jewelery shop in New York. He went into the shop. The Jewish owner told him he had a bunch of silver crosses from a convent & that they sold them to him because they didn't want them any more as they seperated themselves from the world.
Bishop Sheen bought them all up & wore the 1 he did in atonement for what those nuns did in selling them.

The man in me cries out for the return of this mans courage and leadership.
Look at the respect these people showed him. Awesome!
I had the same reaction as Simplex Vir.
How times have changed!
