Does This Mean That We'll Soon Hear Liberation Theology Hooligans Apologize For Supporting Marx, Lenin, Mao And Obama?
Don't hold your breath
I've made no secret of my thoughts and opinions in regards to Bishop Williamson, SSPX. With that said, allow me to say that I read the following with joy.
From Rorate Caeli; (Emphasis mine)
DECLARATION
The Holy Father and my Superior, Bishop Bernard Fellay, have requested that I reconsider the remarks I made on Swedish television four months ago, because their consequences have been so heavy.
Observing these consequences I can truthfully say that I regret having made such remarks, and that if I had known beforehand the full harm and hurt to which they would give rise, especially to the Church, but also to survivors and relatives of victims of injustice under the Third Reich, I would not have made them.
On Swedish television I gave only the opinion (..."I believe"..."I believe"...) of a non-historian, an opinion formed 20 years ago on the basis of evidence then available and rarely expressed in public since. However, the events of recent weeks and the advice of senior members of the Society of St. Pius X have persuaded me of my responsibility for much distress caused. To all souls that took honest scandal from what I said before God I apologise.
As the Holy Father has said, every act of injust violence against one man hurts all mankind.

I have been in Central America, in the 80s. I heard all the crap the Liberation theologians were spouting. We even had some "missionaries" talk in our Parish, and at our H.S. .
None of them mentioned the crap I saw, and dream about still, down there.
As I said to Prevat2 earlier today, nice apology for offending anyone who took offense....but not a word that he plans to do any reading, research, or field trips to dissaude him from his erroneous conclusions about the actual number (Jews, and others) killed by the Third Reich.
Former Altar Boy, Hello from another former altar boy. How many Jews were killed in the Holocaust? The answer immediately is 6 million. Where did that come from? Well, most will tell you in came at the Nuremburg trials. They needed some number and every effort was made to have that number be as big as possible. many of the records the Nazi's collected were destroyed. Some survivors gave out numbers over 10 million in her camp alone, but the simple math did not add up. It was not possible to kill that many and destroy them. There are two Jews who over decades have dedicated their lives to the study of numbers, where, who, why. What they discovered was that the main part of the 6 million number was on the basis that Auschwitz killed 4 million jews. So they started there and soon discovered some very severe problems with this number. When they presented their numbers and methods, they were so well done that the plaque at Auschwitz was changed and a new one put in place. This was carried by the New York Times I believe in 1983. How did the numbers change? The original plaque put in place after the war listed the 4 million jews killed. The new one liste about 1.5 million jews killed. Now this is no small number unless you look at government budgets. It is 2.5 million lives. However, the 6 million number was never changed because it was now accepted fact and many did not want in any way to diminish the crime. The work of these men (as I said both honored historians from a University in Jerusalem)continued and other errors were found at all the sites. What makes it hard is that the census was used to determine how many Jews were in a country and many of the Census were very poor work. What also occured between the census and the holocaust was a world wide depression and during this many people died of starvation or other probelms related to the hunger. Some died during the war as did other civilians. Some died in Ghettos. All of this makes it very hard. But I am certain that 6 million were not killed just based on the one change at Auschwitz. This does not make the horror less. However, to condemn the man based on getting the numbers wrong and saying he needs to study is not right either and gets to the point of the need for free speech.
Also, you might be under the assumption that this person now has their excommunication lifted and he will now be a bishop in the Roman Catholic Church. This is not true. There is still a long process and things that were done need to be undone and reconcilliation made. I suspect that he may not even be a priest in the Church. Lets wait and let it play out. But lets also defend his right to his opinion and free speech.
My last point is that are we now saying that bishops who say nutty things cannot be bishops anymore? Do they lose their right of free speech? frankly I am more concerned about bishops who are silent. What if in 2006, two years before our last election, the USCCB had united and made a statement that unless the democratic party did not disovow their committment to the murder of babies in the womb and did not state clearly that marriage was now and always would be between one man and one woman, and lastly honor all life including embryo's, that they would have to do everything in their power to encourage Catholics not to vote for anyone in that party. If they did this with authoirty and followed through with great teaching of their flock for two years, abortion would end in our country and marriage would be firm and embroyo's not used for research. Their silence is far more offensive to me than anything this guy can say about numbers from 60 years ago when 8-10 times that many babies are being killed in the continuing holocaust that makes German nazi horror pale in comparison.
