Pope May Make "New" Mass More Solemn
Sign of Peace to be moved
A top Vatican official says Pope Benedict XVI is considering introducing a change to the "New Order," i.e. the plain’ ol’ Ordinary Form, Mass liturgy.
Cardinal Francis Arinze, who heads the Vatican office for sacraments, says the Pope may move the placement of the sign of peace, where congregants shake hands or hug (or kiss, or walk around and crawl across pews, to talk and giggle).
Arinze told the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano in a recent interview that the Pope has asked bishops to express their opinions and will then decide.
Under the change, the sign of peace, which now takes place moments before Communion, would come earlier. Arinze said the change might help create a more solemn atmosphere as the faithful are preparing to receive the Body and Blood of their Lord and Savior.

How about axing the sign of peace in any non-Solemn Mass?
Works GREAT for the TLM which I attend.
No me-worship time.
"congregants shake hands or hug (or kiss, or walk around and crawl across pews, to talk and giggle)."
I didn't realize you took my kids to Mass!!
Which sign of the peace is this referring to? There's the greet each other as friends sign of the peace....then there's the greet each other as brothers and sisters in Christ right before Eucharist sign of peace. I've never understood this.
oh carp and trout..
that was me Mightymom, Subvet's better half, sorry, I'd forgotten I'd logged him in so I could fix-er-up his blog a bit.
Axing the SOP would be great. I doubt they'll remove it permanently though.
I don't so much mind it in our Parish. I'm talking .03 seconds and it's straight to the Agnus Dei. I think it's the shortest SOP in the Diocese. :)
Frankly, I think the SoP should be REmoved. It become social time, and I don't think moving it in the Mass would really change that.
My ex-boss usually axes the sign of peace during the winter months (All Saints to Easter, resuming at the Easter Vigil).
I could justify it going completely.
Pax Domini sit semper vobiscum.
Et cum spiritu tuo.
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi...

If H.H. put's it back where it was, it will be a big help. After all, that's the traditional place for it, and it's where the gospel says to put it--befor you offer your gifts!
Another great way to fix it is this: The shacking hands etc is an OPTION in the GIRM. Simply remove that option, and make the sign of peace verbal.
Oh, and tell those bishops who like to "study" Vatican directives and documents on the Lirutgy rather than implement them: This isn't somthing not to do--comply or be deposed for schism.
This can't happen soon enough.
It's not that I don't wish for peace on earth, for my neighbor and all. I just really don't like the interuption in the flow of the mass.
But, while we're at it, what news on nixing the "hand-holding" during the Our Father. It seems to be everywhere even when I'm on vactaion.
