Sixteen Members Of Knight Of Columbus Vote Against "Defense Of Marriage" Amendment, Favor Homosexual "Marriage" Instead
The good news: fourteen voted for it
Here's what's up. The Knights of Columbus has been fighting for years to allow "the people to decide" of any given state will legalize so-called "gay marraige". Sooooo..... a Massachusetts state constitutional convention was called and a vote was taken. Fifty votes were needed to add it to the 2008 state ballot. The vote fell short by five votes. Here's the really lousy part --- sixteen legislators, who are also members of the Knights of Columbus, voted against allowing the people to vote on it.
That's right... sixteen members of the K of C voted against defending traditional marriage, despite the clear teachings of the Church, not to mention that the Knights of Columbus themselves are solidly pro-life and proclaim that fact at every opportunity.
Don't get me wrong... it's wonderful that 14 members voted in favor. But how is it that most of the members of the legislature who are also K of C Knights, voted against it? And here's even worse news; according to Pat Korten, Vice President for Communications for the Knights of Columbus, the Knights can really only employ "fraternal correction" and prayer for these Knights. Membership in the Knights is conditioned on being at least 18 and a "practical Catholic", which Korten says means a "practicing Catholic who is recognized as such by the local Church where he goes or the ordinary of the diocese."
"Unless and until the diocese or local parish or someone in the hierarchy decides they are no longer Catholic, that is not our determination to make," said Korten. "We as laymen do not presume to decide whether other laymen are Catholics..."
In the land of Cardinal O'Malley, you can take that thought right out of your head.
This is embarrassing to all members of the K of C. Even though I'm inactive, I'm still a 4th Degree Knight. And guess what.... it embarrasses the hell out of me.

That's sixteen more men who should be barred from receiving Holy Communion. They publicly renounced the beliefs of the Catholic Church, so they should be publicly barred from Communion.
That's just sad. Those guys should be thrown out.
Yup. Count me embarrassed.
Caveman, I wrote an email to the K of C at http://www.kofc.org/un/about/contact/contact.cfm expressing my disappointment in this situation as a Knight and a Priest.
I said that they should not have to depend on the Church to renounce these public sinners. There are legal and canonical issues (as well as, regrettably, bull-%@#* issues) which prevent the Church from writing the membership office at the K of C every time someone does something stupid like vote against life or marriage.
I challenge the K of C to get together a team of lawyers, canon lawyers, and moral theologians to define what the Church definitively teaches on the individual issues of abortion and marriage (so we don't get confused with other issues like the death penalty, global warming, the prosecution of war, and other red-herrings where there might be differences in authentic Catholic opinion) and to ammend their membership rules to deal responsibly with 'disiciplinary lapses' on part of public officials in the Order.
"Fraternal correction" in these matters must be done IN CHARITY and FOR THE SALVATION OF SOULS. To duck this issue means that not only is the K of C NOT taking its mission of forming Catholic gentlemen seriously, but it is potentially complicit in allowing members to run headlong into damnation.
I suggest that all cave-dwelling Catholics write to the K of C on this matter.
That's clearly a betrayal of the Church. Odds are you will find a similar level of adherence to doctrine in their home parishes. Leadership does come from the top.
Count me in as another embarrassed KC. In my reading of the KCs rules Pat Korten is technically correct in the fact that under current rules there is nothing they can do to expel them. Maybe the rules need to be looked at?
Also, what does Korten mean by "fraternal correction"?
Somehow, I suspect that if Fr. McGivney was arround it would be a lot more than what actually is being done.
I suspect that "fraternal correction" is just one of those bs phrases that mean nothing. Or maybe it means you don't drink beer with them. What it really means is they can vote anyway they like and not worry about a thing.
This is trash. If they can organize the huge insurance program, they can find a way to unload dissenters. Hell, they obviously lied at the 1st degree...
God Bless you, Mr. Caveman, for your membership in the K of C! Too many of its members see the Knights as just a "club" for socializing.
It's men like you who ensure that the "club" STAYS Catholic.
