In the immortal words of Ricky Ricardo... Brother Robert Lentz, OFM has some splainin' to do.
I gather that he works for Trinity Stores of Santa Fe, NM (here and here). Let's just say that Bubba Bobby has... "interesting", shall we say... notions on how Jesus and His Saints should be portrayed.
Yes, this is suppose to be Jesus. But we can thank Brother Robert for giving us proof positive that the whole "Lord of the Dance" crap (that the progressives love to sing about) really isn't about Jesus at all. It's about worshipping some pagan god. Haven't we Traddies have been saying that all along. By the way, is it just me, or is the LOTD really in need of a serious bikini waxing or what? Dude, put on some skivvies.
Next up, we have the Chick Jesus, complete with Grotesquely Obese Barbie (AKA the pagan goddess of fertility). Forget about The Duality of Christ. We now have Quad-Jesus. God, Man, Goddess, Woman. I don't know about you, but I'm sooooo in touch with my feminine side right now, I think I'm ovulating.
Ahhh... now we have "Saint" Mohandas Gandhi of India who once stated "I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ". Golly, is it just me, or does Dandy Gandhi care more about personalities or learning the Truths of Christ? But what do you expect from someone who worships cows while millions are starving to death all around him? No Kool-Aid for me, thanks.
Which brings us to "Saint" Martin Luther King of Georgia. I'm sure he was a swell guy and all, but depicting him as a Saint? The very same guy who consistently denied The Eucharistic Christ? The very same guy who consistently denied Sacramental Confession? The same guy who denied most of the Sacraments? Gosh, I guess all those martyrs who died defending The Church from the Heresy of Protestantism died for nothing, huh?
Got AIDS? That's right, sports fans... it's the Patron Saint of Turd Burglars everywhere, Harvey Milk. Poor old Harv. If he'd had spent a little less time pole vaulting, and a little more time learning how to duck, he'd be on this side of the dirt. Sucks to be him... literally.
And my all time fav... "Saint" Merlin the Magician. You know, we had a saying in the Marine Corps -- "I'm gonna skull **** you to death!" Looks as if Merlin beat me to it.
By the way, is it just me... or does Br. Robert have a thing about portraying nearly nekkid guys?

Wow. Why is this "Franciscan" still a member of the order? Or of the Church for that manner. I don't even know how to respond to these images.
These are truly beautiful works of art, when viewed through the lenses of my old, retired, neo-pagan glasses. Now that I've recovered my faith, they're just in bad taste, especially from a vowed religious.
I took the 8 week inquirey class for the secular franciscans--they're about as FUBAR as these guys. All ecology and feelings, no repentance andl little sacraments.

Interesting. I’ve seen the “Sophia” crap before. I’ve posted about this before on other blogs. Go to www.herchurch.org. You’ll see plenty of references to “Goddess-Sophia”. Hi there... you should also check the website for Brother Robert Lentz's statement about this art. First, this is art he created early in his career. Second, this is art that has been produced for sale and he has no control over it now that it is produced and offered for sale by Trinity. [[this is an important note to consider in reading further]] Third, his order and his superiors have asked that these no longer be put in distribution, and Brother Lentz, in obedience had complied and no further prints or any other form of these images will be produced or distributed. Forth, his superiors and his order understand that he is not responsible for the images that still exist in inventories, and that they have no control over what any entity does with said inventories that are already produced and paid for. [[Unfortunatly, business IS business guys]] So, before you take your rant to the mountain tops, please go to the Trinity web site and read [[as Paul Harvey would say]] "the rest of the story" - and take a look at the copyrights on his art... you'll see that it has progressed miles away from offense. To suggest he should not be a Franciscan, or even a member of the Church? Please. Remember the plank in your own eye. We are sons and daughters - brothers and sisters of the King. Have I ever purchased or admired any of Brother Robert Lentz's art? Yes. Have I purchased any of these particular examples? No. Do I find some of these offensive? Yes. However, in finding the "rest of the story" and reading his speedy reply - I can but say: "There but for the grace of God go I - and I pray for the sins of offense that I have and surly will commit - and stand in the sure hope of Christ's unbounded mercy - for while I surly do not want to do anything to offend - there is always the possibility that I might. Christ sees hearts - I trust he will show mercy.

In deference to the criticism of Michael Sheehan, Archbishop of Santa Fe, these ten images will no longer be distributed by the Order of Friars Minor. Trinity Stores will continue to sell these images until the inventory has been depleted.

Robert Lentz" art -- they are correctly listed as: Trinity Icons Art - because this inventory is OWNED by the Trinity company and is STILL distributed by them until they have exhausted the quantity.
SUGGESTION TO YOU ALL --
Why not send Trinity a donation to destroy the quantity of this inventory - and remove the images from the site - THAT may be the "win / win" situation.

I don't recall creating blatantly heretical, neo-pagan images of Our Lord nor do I recall ever portraying God's Saints in homoerotic poses. Nor do I ever recall putting said images up for sale with the complete approval of the Franciscan Order. But Brother Bobbie and the Franciscans did. And they'll be held accountable one day.

I will defend the Jarhead: I'm going to wager a guess that he already knew Sheehan has handled the sitation considering one of the links provided in his post includes the "In deference..." comment.
In my opinion, however, I think it's still scandalous that the prints are available at all. I wish I had the financial ability to deplete their inventory (great idea, anonymous!) and then burn them, but I have a feeling those heretical images would remain somewhere to poison eyes.
Lentz's "Icons" violate many of the canons for writing Icons.
These images are blasphemous and he should be given canonical punishment of some sort. I leave that up to his Bishop.
These are not art they are meant to be Icons which in the Latin understanding are powerful Sacramentals like the Rosary or the Sacred Heart Image.
In a word - frightening.

In defense of the Ghandi quote, I have to agree with it Cavey, if he means Prots and Roman Prots (and certain folks within my own flock) because I feel the same way. Since my return from the bizarro world of liberalism I've read up many of the early Church father's and Saints, what the early Church taught and practiced, and I frequent a monastery near my in-laws (one mind you that isn't a sodomite whorehouse in cognito) and it amazes me how much self-professed "christians" don't know about the Faith they claim to possess. I saw a trailer for some atheist rivel that Jesus didn't exist and for evidence he asked several evangelicals how the Faith spread after Jesus left. Their responses were very similar, "Uh, well, the Holy Spirit came upon them...uh and they got together...uh" I cringe when they call me a "brother in the faith." I want nothing to do with such people, they get directly in my way from knowing and loving the Lord.
But yeah, Ghandi was a cow worshipper who drank his own urine and whose followers were thugs who beat up rivals.

JESUS CHRIST HAVE MERCY! I am an Eastern Catholic. Icons are very special to us both spiritually and theologically - you will not believe how insulted I am by this sh*t. My heart sunk seeing this demonic vomit. THIS IS SACRALEDGE. The "man" who did this needs to be sent to some prison monastery and spend the rest of his life in doing penance. That or he has to be excommunicated.
You know, this reminds me: one of the local Protestant churches here in town has a big stained-glass window in which St. Francis of Assisi, St. John Chrysostom, St. Athanasius, St. Paul and St. Augustine of Hippo rub shoulders with Martin Luther, Zwingli, and various other Reformation Bigwigs; and even the artist who designed this window did not dare to put halos around the heads of the latter group (though, interestingly, all the canonized saints do have halos).
I don't agree with much of what Kathy wrote, but the existing inventory does seem to be beyond Br. Lentz's control.
Part of me is inclined to follow the anonymous poster's suggestion and send a donation toward destroying the inventory, but part of me is sickened at the thought of giving them money to do what I frankly think they ought to do out of plain decency. I wonder how much remains in inventory?
And I have to disagree with Paul - the pieces of 'art' may be technically proficient, but even trying to look through my pre-Christian eyes I don't see beauty. Maybe Paul's just better at remembering his former lens than I am...or maybe they remind me too much of my mother...

I understand that Trinity Stores intends to continue selling its remaining inventory of Robert Lentz’s more controversial works. I must confess myself disappointed – I would like to think that a business dedicated to serving Catholic Christians would bend further to accommodate the concerns of Archbishop Sheehan. With that said, I do appreciate that Brother Lentz’s order is not continuing to distribute the images, and I realize that, more than likely, you cannot afford to lose the money you’ve already invested in your existing inventory.
I would consider it be a great act of good faith on your part if you would give me an idea of how much remaining inventory you have of the 10 images that concerned Archbishop Sheehan. Although I do not personally have the means to deplete your inventory, I would like to know so I can encourage fundraising to do so. Perhaps we could make an arrangement whereby you would receive something above your original purchase cost but less than the usual retail price of the inventory, to better facilitate reduction of inventory without loss on your part?
Please let me know if you’d be willing to consider something along those lines. I look forward to your response.

Use of the words "Turd Burglar" is offensive and an affront to specific catechism teaching CCC of 2358:

As a recent convert and the mother of 3 sons, what really frightens me is that this man is a friar..is that the correct term? I am scared to death that I will lead my sons into bad places if they have a vocation and become a member of some order like this. How does one separate the good from the bad? Do you all have any advice for a neophyte?

Thank you for writing to us at Trinity Stores. It is a very interesting concept that you propose. Unfortunately, I do not have a proper accounting of all of the existing inventory. All ten icon images were part of the massive assets we purchased when we bought all of Br. Roberts icons from Natural Bridges. It would be a large undertaking for me to pull the boxes filled with the hundreds and hundreds of prints, note cards, postcards, bookmarks, etc. I would be open to this major effort if we got to a place wherein the finances to purchase the products was better secured. Suffice it to say, we have thousands of dollars in just the cost of these icon images.
I wish I could be more helpful to you at this time. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance to you. Thank you again for writing to us.

Actually I think 'turd burglar' is rather funny. Sadly, it offends GOD because it is not charitable. It might be useful in a Chris Rock routine beating up everyone equally, but not by a christian who is supposedly taking the moral high ground. Do you recall the saints warning us that charity is the most important virtue? You are a public unrepentent sinner. Christian admonition must be done in a charitable spirit.

The phrase I use most certainly is crude and offensive. And it also paints a rather disgusting image. But that's exactly what I want.
The homosexual act, much like abortion, is something that too many people sugar coat and glaze over. The highest act of charity we can do for anyone, is to let them know EXACTLY what active homosexuality is. Like I've said, enough of the sugar coating.

The catechism and the faith calls upon us to treat our LGBT brothers and sisters in Christ with charity, as someone with a disorder. Their brains process sexual messages, about once per minute, just like ours do. The cross they bear is heavy, they are called by the church to lifelong celibacy.
You have failed to be charitable, you are unrepetant, you turn your back on christian charity and thumb your nose at the catechism and the faith. You will be in the same place as the homosexual fornicators if you don't correct that.
God may call you to teach, but satan calls you to be uncharitable. You might get someone to think, but are you getting them to think uncharitable thoughts? Are you tempting them to hate? It would be better for you if a millstone were tied around your neck...
