Pray for us!
Notre Dame, Our Mother
Pray for us!
We here at The Lair have been holding our breath for over a month. We're all wearing our Notre Dame hats... Notre Dame shirts... I want to buy a flag of Ireland today, but the Head Cavewoman bonked me with my own club, and she took away my Visa card. Speaking of The Head Cavewoman, she still has a huge crush on Jeff Samardzija, but that's ok.
A few tid- bits of Notre Dame Fighting Irish legends and lore... by the way, if anyone else has any Fightin' Irsh stories, please post 'em!
The entire team still attends Mass prior to every game.
Every player is given a Our Lady of Victory Holy Medal
The original team name wasn't The Notre Dame Fighting Irish. It was simply The Notre Dame Catholics.
I remember many years ago when Lou Holtz was the Head Coach. He was being interviewed and was asked exactly what the name Notre Dame means. Holtz explained that it's French for Our Lady. The interviewer still didn't quite understand. Holtz broke it down and told him "Our Lady is the Virgin Mary, you know, the mother of Jesus".
The interviewer started to get somewhat sarcastic and asked "are you trying to tell me that Jesus is a Fighting Irish fan?". Without missing a beat, Holtz said "I can't speak for Jesus, but I'm pretty sure His momma's rooting for us".
For those of you who may be new here, I strongly suggest you go to this link to give you an example of what kind of individuals are associated with the Notre Dame football program.
GO IRISH!!
And I just wanted to add this older post....
Will the REAL Jeff Samardzija Please stand up?
GO IRISH!
Is Jeff Samardzija that record smashing wide reciever we've all been hearing about?
Or just another NERRRRD!!!!
(nerds...nerds...nerds...nerds)

Caveman, I am something of a flag collector, you can find decent 3 by 5 foot polyester flags for like 10-20 bucks. Polyester doesn't last as long outdoors as nylon or cotton but its gets the job done.
My roomate and I have some flags hanging up in the dorm.
The flags of, Vatican City, Germany in the 1870's (it just looks cool), Spain, Australia, The Flag of the American Revolution with a "76" on it, and the "Irish American Flag."
That one might interest you, it is more or less based on the flag of the 1798 Rebellion against the English. It has a harp and laurel on a green field with the words "ERIN GO BRAGH!" under it.
I think a similar flag was used in the 1916 Rebellion. Unlike the current flag with a green section (Catholics), an orange section (Protestants), and a white section (peace between them) the older flag is a solid tribute to the Catholics who rebelled against England.
That nerd is none other than Harold from the Red Green show....its on PBS in St. Louis sometimes, and it is really funny in a weird PBS kind of way.
The Irish had their chance tonight, but alas....
They were my dads favorite team of all time. When cable first came out, he refused to get it, until he found out he could watch ND more often...then he couldn't sign up fast enough.
Everytime I see them play, it reminds me of him, passed away almost 4 years now.
really funny in a weird PBS kind of way
also can be said as ...
ozzing Canadian humor
Steve Smith (uncle Red) and Pat McKenna (Harold) are great together.
