NBC's The Book Of Daniel
Show me the money!!
With a Hat Tip to Charlie
A friend of mine forwarded an e-mail to me concerning the bottom line to any new TV show... money. Below is a rather interesting observation from a fellow named Brian. Even though I've never met this gent, he sure hit the nail right on the head. Hope you enjoy his obervations...
Well, I wasn't supporting the show, but I did watch "The Book of Daniel"tonight with 2 purposes in mind. First I wanted to see just how bad it was going to be. From the very beginning of the show I started to make a list of everything that I disagreed with. Whether it be teachings that were contrary to Doctrine or just the secular culture trying to push ideas onto us. I stopped after about 2 minutes into the show as I already had writer's cramp. Whether it was the endorsements for temptation, homosexuality, (take your pick really), it was unbelievable just how many things were corrupt with this show.
However, by the time the show was done, I was smiling from ear to ear. That is because my second purpose was to make a list of all the advertisers. With such a list in my hand I would know who to boycott and find out whatother products were produced by these companies.
I counted 7 commercials for movies/DVDs.
There were also 2 commercials for Burlington Coat Factory.
1 each for: Disney, Icy Hot Sleeve, Just For Men, Checkers (which mayhave been a regional commercial), H & R Block, Gold Bond and anot-for-profit commercial for earthquake relief in Southeast Asia.
This now brings the total to 16 commercials. The rest of the show (a 2 hour blockin primetime mind you) was all promotional advertisement for NBC. I counted 54 promotional advertisements for other NBC shows. That is enormous because all those promos do not bring in a dollar of outside revenue for this particular TV show. Although some of those promos were not full 30 second ads, some where rather long. Overall, the percentage of non-revenue producing promos far outweighed the profit-making outside commercials.I don't know if I am just doing a biased analysis, but I have to conclude something here. The opportunity costs for all that lost advertising is going to not just hurt NBC for that 2 hour block of primetime advertising, but ultimately cause the network to pull the plug on "The Book of Daniel"(ironic since the show is pro-euthanasia). Even if NBC were to air oldreruns of Cheers in that time it would have earned more revenue than wasting all those spots on promos. Could it be that companies were so afraid tobe associated with this show that they refused to buy advertising spots? It is documented that 6 NBC affiliates wouldn't even air the show (see Three More NBC Affiliates Nix 'Daniel' <http://newsmax.com/archives/ic/2006/1/6/142950.shtml>.
We still have to wait to get the final verdict. That will come from theNielsen ratings which will be released next week. We will then have tosee if this trend continues. However, it does display that if we are united in our beliefs and only support those who support us, we can be a powerful force. The next time the secular media tries to push something on us that contradicts our beliefs, we have to hurt them where they hurt the most. Right in their pocketbooks. Only then will we rid ourselves of everything that "The Book of Daniel" is endorsing.

Who cares about a bunch of dysfunctional Episcopalians? Chances are the show won't last long...
The only thing scandalous about the show was how poorly written it was. I mean, really! Can you stuff any MORE plot twists into 2 hours? Yikes.
Peace,
Jamie
Some of us signed petitions to the sponsors of the show. We let them know we won't buy any of their products. We were disappointed in them for sponsoring this show in the first place.
