Riot police shield Obama from tea-party grandmas
Rooftop snipers eye patriots singing 'God Bless America'
When hundreds of tea-party protesters – including many elderly women – gathered outside a civic center where President Obama was giving a public speech Wednesday, they were surprised to be greeted by police dispatched in full riot gear.
Obama spoke in Quincy, Ill., at the Oakley Lindsay Civic Center. The event was open to the public, and about 2,000 tickets were distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis.
About 200 protesters peacefully rallied outside the civic center, carrying signs that read "Give Us Liberty Not Debt" and yellow "Don't Tread On Me" flags, the Quincy Herald-Whig reported. Protesters waved U.S. flags and shouted "Remember in November" and "You work for us."
After Obama's motorcade arrived, a Secret Service agent instructed protesters to move across the street. The crowd began singing "God Bless, America" and the National Anthem. Quincy Deputy Police Chief Ron Dreyer ordered police in full riot gear to march up the street and stand between the tea partiers and the civic center.
Snipers were also spotted on the rooftop of the building.
The tea partiers complied when they were told to move across the street, behind a sidewalk and into a parking lot. The riot police did not come into contact with the crowd, and the tea partiers sang patriotic songs while obeying the orders.
"Thanks for protecting our president," one tea partier can be heard saying on a video of the event. "He's the anointed One, the Messiah."
Another man said, "Illegals are rioting, and we're as peaceful as you can believe."
NBC affiliate WGEM described the crowd as "rowdy," though they could be heard singing "God Bless America" in the background during the report.
Inside, Obama told the crowd, "[W]hen I travel now, it kind of causes a ruckus."
The photos and videos sparked a wave of blogger reactions, including the following comments:
I hope the riot police have full auto assault weapons with armor-piercing rounds. I hear false teeth can deflect normal NATO rounds.

Anyone who reads this blog with regularity knows that I'm a VERY pro-cop individual. But what these cops did was bullshit. If there was a question of a pay-raise, and union negotiations were breaking down, you could bet your ass that a wave of "Blue Flu" would sweep through the PD.
But gearing-up to do street battle with a bunch of pensioners? I reiterate -- bullshit.
Those cops should be absolutely and totally ashamed of themselves.

Vir, my good bud, after two decades in the Corps, don't tell me you weren't ordered to some things that were BS or that you thought were just plain dumb. Those cops were geared up and on scene because they were ordered to and I'm sure most were embarrassed to be there.
Look at our little thin skinned president. Can't handle a little peaceful protest from the pensioners. Dope and chains is what people asked for, dope and chains is what they get
makes me wonder if those poor saps were the ones that drew the short straw because I find it hard to believe a cop would volunteer for that spectacle.
You have to remember that Quincy is not exactly the most pro-Republican, pro-life part of the Midwest. I'm across the river in Missouri and I know that Mayor Spring probably wanted to make a big show of support for the CIC (commander in chief) for political purposes, and I don't doubt that the White House wanted to play up the fact that the Midwest Heartland is just as dangerous a place for the O SO WONDERFUL President as Iraq or some other police state that he wants to impress with his power and authority by calling out the SWAT squad. What a joke!! Please, can November be moved up on the calendar?
This was done to support the media template, that Tea Party types are all violent, racist, dangerous, seditious, insurrectionists, etc., etc., etc.
Like the Church, police forces have all sorts in them, including those that we rather were not. I'm betting Mayor Spring and/or his Chief of Police offered hazard or combat pay. Some of the officers may well have done it for the money, and some may have done it to support the media template. But I'm sure some did it only under duress.
Arkanabar has it right. This was all for appearances sake to continue the villianization of those opposed to Obama & gang.
