More Jesuit turmoil in California
President of Loyola Marymount University resigns

Jesuit Fr. Robert B. Lawton announced on Monday he will be stepping down as president of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles when the current academic year ends. Fr. Lawton has led the school since May 1999. During his tenure, he allowed pro-abortion commencement speakers, dissident theologians, and approved policies giving insurance coverage to the “registered domestic partners” of school employees, as well as offering school workers “enhanced contraceptive coverage.”

According to a biography of Fr. Lawton on the LMU website, he became the 14th president of the Jesuit university in May 1999. “Since that time, he has led the educational institution through a time of rapid and progressive change,” said the biography. During Fr. Lawton’s tenure as LMU president, the university developed a reputation far from orthodox. An April 2005 symposium at the school featured “ecofeminist” Rosemary Radford Ruether, who proposes calling God “Gaia,” the Roman Mother Earth goddess. In 2004 the university offered a symposium at which speaker Fr. Michael Crosby called celibacy “a system of power, of patriarchy.”

In June 2006, Florida state circuit court Judge George Greer, who ordered feeding tubes removed from Terry Schiavo, spoke at a conference on media law at the Loyola Law School. “Based on the intense scrutiny and media coverage generated by the Schiavo case,” said a Loyola press release, “Judge Greer will bring a unique perspective to the journalists in attendance.”

The Lawton-led university has also repeatedly hosted pro-abortion speakers at commencement ceremonies. The 2006 commencement featured Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa; in 2005, it was California Attorney General Bill Lockyer. In 2000, pro-abortion Connecticut Sen. Christopher Dodd addressed graduates of Loyola Law School.
Any chance he can take Rodger the Dodger with him?

I can't help but wonder--with the practice of Rmanitias, the low key way of running things, was he "encouraged" to resign, with perhaps the threat or promise of canonical proceedings over his head?

I would hope so, but if so, I would rather that it was done more publicly--that way it could encourage the others.
