As a (still) Protestant, There's one other major point you left out, which is likely a big hurdle for most of us. For such prayers to Mary and saints to be effective the Catholic doctrine of Purgatory needs to be right. I'm not going to say much on that, because I'm slowly going through the CCC, and finding it agreeable indeed. I just figured I'd bring that point to your attention.; 4:35 AM

If the saints don't know what is going on here on Earth then why does St. Paul talk about a cloud of witnesses watching us run the race? Do they not think the saints are watching? & do they think that if they are they are not interceding??? Esp Mary?; 6:07 AM

I would like to suggest respectfully, that you buy the following two books. They are a much easier read than the CCC which is really an encyclopedia of sorts and is not all that readable; more suited to consultation and research:

1. Fr. John Hardon, S.J., THE CATHOLIC CATECHISM, published by Doubleday--very readable and sets the Faith of the Church including its dogma and doctrine in its appropriate historical setting.

2. Fr. John Hardon, S.J., either the POCKET CATHOLIC CATECHISM or THE QUESTION & ANSWER CATECHISM.--shorter texts compared with Book 1. Easy to read. I prefer the POCKET only because I am not a fan of Q&A books even though I recognize the immense value of the BALTIMORE CATECHISM series.

Both books (or all three given No. 2.) are thoroughly orthodox in the faith and not at all watered-down as so much of modern Catholic religious publications.

The late Fr. Hardon was a holy priest. I am confident that some day he will be glorified at the Catholic altar.

One final recommendation. If you are interested in the theology of the Holy Eucharist, read Pope Paul VI's great encyclical, MYSTERIUM FIDEI that you can google on the vatican.va web site in English. Pope Paul was in many ways a weak Pope IMHO, but his encyclical is a masterpiece. When I originally read it, I could see the Holy Spirit teaching the Church through the person of the Pope.

For all the problems the Catholic Church has--it has never been a fun religion for me, at least since Vatican II--I find it to be so very interesting and intellectually satisfying. I am most grateful to God for this.; 11:34 AM

I picked up the CCC because I did not know what exactly the doctrine was, and I have come to a point that IF I'm going to disagree with the Catholic Church, then I need to know on what and why. There are many misconceptions among protestants, and some local practices (usually against doctrine) do hurt protestant view of Catholicism.; 3:18 AM

Those who dislike Catholic so-called "Mariolatry" would go ape over this prayer from the Byzantine Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom (which the Ukrainian Catholics use):

"It is truly right to bless thee, O God-bearing One, as the ever-blessed and immaculate Mother of our God. More honorable than the cherubim and by far more glorious than the seraphim; ever a virgin, thou gavest birth to God the Word, O true Mother of God, we magnify thee."

(It's prettier in Ukrainian.)

Unfortunately, too few non-Catholics make this effort. Not just Protestants. I especially mean secularists, atheists/agnosticists.

Old Bob quoted one of the most prominent Theotokia to the Holy Mother of God that all Byzantine Christians pray. I also recall other very beautiful Theotokia that have wonderful expressions about the BVM such as "all pure and blameless," and "holy and immaculate."
