Quoting A Heretic
Henri Nouwen, to be specific
I read an interesting sermon on-line today. The author of this particular sermon quoted the late Henri Nouwen (may God have mercy on his soul).
I'm somewhat familiar with Nouwen's drivel. Here's a wonderful example;
"Every one will be saved" and "Anyone can find his own way to God". “Today I personally believe that while Jesus came to open the door to God’s house, all human beings can walk through that door, whether they know about Jesus or not. Today I see it as my call to help every person claim his or her own way to God” (Sabbatical Journey, New York: Crossroad, 1998, p. 51). No exception for Invincible Ignorance... just the heresy of Universal Salvation. And examples of Nouwen's universalism and pantheism aren't exactly hard to find.
There's a lot of truth in the totality of the Nouwen's writings. Then again, Satan knows Scripture, too. Knowing this, why would any faithful Catholic quote this de facto heretic?

Deo gratias, the sermon which we heard today was on the topic of "extra Ecclesiam nulla salus" and its correct interpretation. This teaching of the Church, of course, absolutely discounts universal salvation. But then Father Nouwen would have known that--as you said, may God have mercy on his soul.
Every time I go to my local Catholic bookstore Nouwen's books are always there. I'd complain but it's obvious that the manager and clientel are big on his stuff.
Not just Universalism but also Pelagianism.
