Providence mayor wants to tax college students

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The mayor of Providence wants to slap a $150-per-semester tax on the 25,000 full-time students at Brown University and three other private colleges in the city, saying they use resources and should help ease the burden on struggling taxpayers.

Mayor David Cicilline said the fee would raise between $6 million and $8 million a year for the city, which is facing a $17 million deficit.

If enacted, it would apparently be the first time a U.S. city has directly taxed students just for being enrolled.Here's is where I have to ask the musical question -- what kind of dirt-bag would TAX learning? It didn't exactly a whole bunch of investigative sleuthing to put 2+2 together. From the official website of the City of Providence, RI;

"... and went on to earn a J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center. He served as a public defender in Washington, D.C. before returning home to open a practice in criminal defense and civil rights law."That helps some to explain things. I can't help but wonder what kind of criminals he defended. And being a queer, it doesn't take a lot of imagination to figure out what kind of "civil rights" he so bravely battled for.
