Wolves, Revisited
Helmet tip to Wildcat Conservative for sending me this

An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. "A fight is going on inside me," he said to the boy.

"It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil - he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego."

He continued, "The other is good - he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too."

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, "Which wolf will win?"

The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."

I find it interesting he is teaching is grandson. Wonder if he taught his son this lesson or if he was too busy feeding his wolf.

I find it interesting how often you see an angry child who is so because his parents feed him anger when he seeks their attention when they are off busy feeding their greed wolf their time. A child learns to hit others because the angry parent hits them. The arrogant child is usually matched to arrogant parents. I guess our kids watch us feed the wolf or maybe they have to exist on what our wolf craps at the end of the day.

Greta,
I don't think it was so much that the son was left out... I take the story as emphasizing a wisend old man teaching a very young boy.

Just like how it was between me and my grandfather.

In a family it is often the wise old elders who teach this kind of profound stuff, in the case of the Indians the father could quote possibly been out hunting to get meat for the family or some other business which sometimes meant weeks away.

This is why if you can you should try and live close to extended family especially grandparents the nuclear family is the minimum for a family unit not the ideal, the ideal is the grand family which includes grandparents. And if you can extend this even further to something along the lines of the clan or tribal system even better.
