I Sure Hope He Does Have The Heart Of A Lion
He'll need it
Bishop Salvatore Cordileone, Auxiliary of the Diocese of San Diego, has been tapped to be the next Bishop of Oakland. And what a shit-hole he's been cast into. He's got his work cut out for him.
Bishop Cordileone can count on many of his own priests to hate him, undermine him, and back stab him at every turn.
Pretty strong words, huh? What do I have to back it up with? Just this;
Interim administrator for Oakland diocese once allowed homosexual marriages, built church with no crucifix or tabernacle. And this...
The Diocese of Oakland's Gay Outreach Ministry will show a film that teaches homosexuality “is as natural for homosexuals as heterosexuality is for heterosexuals”. And this;
“For women and men engaged in ministry in the Diocese of Oakland”
...Rosemary Ruether also wants to discard patriarchal and hierarchical notions of God; she and other “eco-feminists” have said that God can be called Gaia, the name of the Roman mother earth goddess.
Thus, it is perhaps no surprise that the Sophia Summer Institute will feature something called “Missa Gaia -- A Mass for the World,” presented by Sophia’s director, Jim Conlon. And those are just a few. One doesn't have to research all that much to see what a theological cesspool the Diocese of Oakland is. Literally in the shadow of San Francisco, is this a surprise? And here's this bishop who not only is receptive to the Traditional Latin Mass, but actually celebrates it? You don't have to be a Nostradumbass to figure out how he'll be received.
But anyhow, if I could be so bold as to suggest one piece of Marine Corps wisdom to Bp. Cordileone, it would be this; nothing makes a first impression like the extreme.
And if His Excellency thinks for a second that he can reason with the raving Modernists who are so well entrenched in Oakland, well... I suggest he purchase side-mirrors for his biretta and a Kevlar cassock.

And let's add one more thing:
the good bishop inherits millions of dollars of debt over that monstrosity of a "cathedral" his predecessor built (not to mention the huge budget it's going to take to maintain that place with all its glass).
Let's get His Excellency a flak jacket and/or some chain mail!
*sigh* Why, Oh why, in this age of liturgical innovation and new things, can we not have something like a pontifical FNH SCAR, with matiching ballistic vest in the liturgical color of the day.
Or at least an order of warrior monks recruited from paratroopers, marines, rangers and swat team members?
What a set-up! I hope you'll stay on top of this story, Vir!
Oakland is not prepared for the can of Diocesan whup-ass he's gonna open on 'em. They will be grateful when he does, even if they don't know it yet.
Bishop Cordileone served at the Vatican as a canon lawyer and is a brilliant, gracious, yet straight-up orthodox man. (Yes, you can emphasize the word "straight" there....)
He got San Diego headed back on the right path (what will happen now, I know not). I predict he will continue to be a refreshingly honest, no-nonsense leader, who will deal with the opposition and depravity he encounters in a charitable but firm manner. No liturgical loopholes - hello...LAWYER!
Let the Springtime cleaning begin...
Peter and Paul went to Rome. He should view this with honor that God has placed him with such a cross. He must be a good man. I will add him with the growing list of bishops who are going to change the church. If he has the faith of a mustard seed, he is in good hands.
Greta, true... and he can count on plenty of buffetts and stripes, from his own priests.
"Let's get His Excellency a flak jacket and/or some chain mail!"
Well, for all the wrong reasons, some of his "faithful" might like him a bit too much if he had some chain mail.
Wasn't he the bishop that nearly got ran out of the Diocesean GLBTG Ministry (I need a shower after typing that) luncheon he was invited to in San Diego? Something along the lines of they wanted him to talk and he enumerated the position of the Church in good Christian Charity and was promptly ostracized. Or am I thinking of another auxiliary?
What would be the best way to contact him? I'd like to send him a letter of encouragement.
WC,
Probably contact him via the Diocese of San Diego.
My mistake, I was thinking about Co-Adjucator Bishop Soto of Sacramento.
For those who don't know it, not only is the Diocese of Oakland "literally in the shadow of San Francisco", but contained within its borders is the real clown car show of the Bay Area..... Berkeley (city and university). The liturgical abuses I've seen in Berkeley have been far worse than the ones I've seen SF.
