Freakin' SLAM!!
As I rapidly approach the possibility of counting on TWO hands, the number of American Catholic Bishops with a backbone
Finally... FINALLY! Here's some of the article from The Catholic News Agency; (Emphasis mine)Catholic ‘complacency’ shares blame for country’s failures, Archbishop Chaput says
Detroit, Mich., Mar 21, 2009 / 12:32 pm (CNA).- Archbishop of Denver Charles J. Chaput delivered a speech on Saturday reflecting on the significance of the November 2008 election. Warning that media “narratives” should not obscure truth, he blamed the indifference and complacency of many U.S. Catholics for the country’s failures on abortion, poverty and immigration issues.
...Archbishop Chaput said: “November showed us that 40 years of American Catholic complacency and poor formation are bearing exactly the fruit we should have expected. (That just might explain the priest yesterday who tried 3 times within a 10 minute conversation to convince me that I needed a "partnership with God". This guy just didn't get it that God is our Divine Master, and we're all just humble servants... not "partners".)
Noting that there was no question about President Barack Obama’s views on abortion “rights,” embryonic stem cell research and other “problematic issues,” he commented:
“Some Catholics in both political parties are deeply troubled by these issues. But too many Catholics just don’t really care. That’s the truth of it.
Offering a sober evaluation of the state of American Catholicism, he added:
“We need to stop over-counting our numbers, our influence, our institutions and our resources, because they’re not real. We can’t talk about following St. Paul and converting our culture until we sober up and get honest about what we’ve allowed ourselves to become. We need to stop lying to each other, to ourselves and to God by claiming to ‘personally oppose’ some homicidal evil -- but then allowing it to be legal at the same time.”
Commenting on society’s attitude towards Catholic beliefs, Archbishop Chaput said, “we have to make ourselves stupid to believe some of the things American Catholics are now expected to accept.” (And the responsibility lies squarely in the collective laps of the members of the USCCB. What good are shepherds who lay with the wolves?)

How many do you count at this point?
he[Apb. Chaput]blamed the indifference and complacency of many U.S. Catholics for the country’s failures on abortion, poverty and immigration issues.
This is the ecclesiastical equivalent of the little boy when seeing the Emperor parading down the street buck naked while everybody was saying how wonderfully he was arrayed, stated boldly out loud, "The f*ing emperor is naked!" [OK I editorialized this a bit! LOL]
(And the responsibility lies squarely in the collective laps of the members of the USCCB. What good are shepherds who lay with the wolves?)
I would nuance this by saying that the USCCB, as a corporate entity, has NO ecclesiastical authority over us, other than approving those past, execrable ICEL translations they foisted on us, and perhaps their political stands (e.g., immigration) that no Catholic is bound as a matter of faith or will to give assent. But I would say that it is each (arch)diocesan Ordinary who should be proclaiming and teaching the Faith and calling notorious (i.e., public) sinners to account for their actions. It is a matter of cojones . . . or lack thereof.
Bp. Bruskewitz of Lincoln, Neb is number two?
Jim C.
BB,
I take back the "two hands" comment.
Off the top of my head, I count three. No... make that two. Abp Burke just got transferred to Rome.
Damn it.
What!? Rome stole Abp Burke?!?!
CC,
Yep. He's the head honcho for the Vatican version of the Supreme Court.
The St. L auxiliary that was left in charge until a replacement is named was the 1 who said the bit at last Fall's Bishops meeting about dying to defend the unborn that was met with underwhelming silence as the response. Unfortunately he is almost 75 or I'd be campaigning for him to take over down there. Burke trained him well.
