Nine Steps to Peace for Obama in the New Year
There's too much to say, so I'm limiting my own comments. I'm sure all you faithful readers will think of a couple quips in the combox ;)The following is a memo to Barack Obama from Deepak Chopra
You have been elected by the first anti-war constituency since 1952, when Dwight D. Eisenhower was elected after promising to end the Korean War. But ending a war isn't the same as bringing peace. America has been on a war footing since the day after Pearl Harbor, 67 years ago. We spend more on our military than the next 16 countries combined. If you have a vision of change that goes to the heart of this country's deep problems, ending our dependence on war is far more important than ending our dependency on foreign oil.
The most immediate changes are economic. Unless it can make as much money as war, peace doesn't stand a chance. Since aerospace and military technologies remain the United States' most destructive export, fostering wars around the world, what steps can we take to reverse that trend and build a peace-based economy?
1. Scale out arms dealing and make it illegal by the year 2020.
2. Write into every defense contract a requirement for a peacetime project.
3. Subsidize conversion of military companies to peaceful uses with tax incentives and direct funding.
4. Convert military bases to housing for the poor. (What do you call second lieutenants? ;))
5. Phase out all foreign military bases.
6. Require military personnel to devote part of their time to rebuilding infrastructure.
7. Call a moratorium on future weapons technologies.
8. Reduce armaments like destroyers and submarines that have no use against terrorism and were intended to defend against a superpower enemy that no longer exists.
9. Fully fund social services and take the balance out of the defense and homeland security budgets. *tears out hair and runs around screaming*
These are just the beginning. We don't lack creativity in coping with change. Without a conversion of our present war economy to a peace economy, the high profits of the military-industrial complex ensures that it will never end.
Do these nine steps seem unrealistic or fanciful? In various ways, other countries have adopted similar measures. The former Soviet army is occupied with farming and other peaceful work, for example. But comparisons are rather pointless, since only the United States is burdened with such a massive reliance on defense spending. Ultimately, empire follows the dollar. As a society, we want peace, and we want to be seen as a nation that promotes peace. For either ideal to come true, you as president must back up your vision of change with economic reality. So far, that hasn't happened under any of your predecessors. All hopes are pinned on you.
I borrowed this from LarryD at Acts of the Apostasy, who has titled the article something slightly different... and of course a brilliant snippet from Larry:
He needs to add a tenth step: Hand China the keys to the White House.Damn right!

Are you sure these aren't the nine steps to disaster?
Uhmmmnnn.....
Who in Hell is Deepak Chopra?
If even one of these things happnes the US economy WILL collapse. US addiction to selling weapons is far higher than addiction to Oil.
Why not just find someone we can surrender to, and let them do all the Deepass Chokerot crap?
Can't wait to retire and build that compound...
Cookie,
You're right!!! I like!
Are you sure this guy's name wasn't Dipshit Joker?
My responses to just two of these inane ideas:
1. Si vis pacem, para bellum. (If you want peace, prepare for war.) Reagan used it to help collapse the Soviet Union.
6. One of the best ways to reduce the effectiveness of training and harm the morale of fighting men is to assign them to do non-military work. Anyone remember the Clinton Administration and their international "Meals on Wheels" programs in which they used our armed forces (the same warriors they held in contempt)?
I keep hearing that annoying woho, wohoho sound track from the Famous Vonnage commercials, you know "people do stupid things"

this one even includes a GUN, enjoy
What a F-ing looney! He makes Kucinich look normal. Anyway we can send him to China?
I thought I was hearing the Vonage music as I was reading that nonsense as well...
All right! It's not just me! anymore I think it should be the opening theme for the USCCB conferences as well
Oh...I thought war was for oil, Deepak. No blood for oil, right? Oh, guess not.
Dependent on war? That's a good one. Oh, evil America, sucking the blood of innocent third-world people to fuel its capitalist machine....
Personally, I would argue that our most destructive export is not death in the form of weaponry, but death in the form of pop cultural ideologies espoused by Hollywood and other media outlets. This culture of death can certainly include military violence, but this is not the center of the issue here. Rather than being a politico-military issue, this is a cultural problem. As long as Americans refuse to uphold the sanctity of life from natural birth to natural death, as long as we glorify violence in all of its forms, as long as we live in a society that disregards universal morals and absolute truth....the culture of death will continue.
And Deepak, would you like to present your ideas to Vladmir Putin and Hu Jintao? I'm sure they will be thrilled to hear them.
1. Scale out arms dealing and make it illegal by the year 2020.
Sure, if other countries agree. I'm sure they will...yeah right.
2. Write into every defense contract a requirement for a peacetime project.
Ok...just WTF. That's all I can say...no more.
3. Subsidize conversion of military companies to peaceful uses with tax incentives and direct funding.
And how much will that cost? Also, there are very few, if any companies (mainly small businesses) that are solely dedicated to military manufacturing. You know, Ford, Chrysler, GM all build weapons for the United States...might as well shut them down as well.
4. Convert military bases to housing for the poor.
This isn't feasible or cost effective. In fact, it is much simpler to start from the ground up when planning housing for the indigent. The military bases are laid out for the military...they aren't made to house single families (with the exception of on base housing at some locations.) I'm sure the indigent will be thrilled with living in a concrete box with fifty other individuals as well as sharing open showers and toilets without any partitions.
5. Phase out all foreign military bases.
In order to nullify any power the United States military has? Buddy, if it wasn't for our bases in South Korea, Kim Jong Il would have several tens of millions more slaves to starve and torture. Our bases in Germany prevented the Soviet Union from overrunning Western Europe. Oh, and I'm sure most European countries will be thrilled to pick up the defense bill. Doesn't anyone realise that the reason defense spending in the rest of the world is so low is because we take care of it? Europe couldn't afford its vaunted social programs without us footing the defense bill.
6. Require military personnel to devote part of their time to rebuilding infrastructure.
Ok. I don't really have a problem with this one. They do already.
7. Call a moratorium on future weapons technologies.
In fact, I suggest the immediate destruction of all advanced weaponry. All future battles will be fought by the sword, bow, and musket. This will require massive amounts of manpower, and large scale battles remnicent of Medieval Europe or the American Civil War. Deepak, you nitwit, the reason casualty rates have plummetted in the past fifty years is because of advanced technology. Furthermore, hardly any of our modern conveniences and technologies would have come about without military research.
8. Reduce armaments like destroyers and submarines that have no use against terrorism and were intended to defend against a superpower enemy that no longer exists.
Therefore, when Russia wants to invade the Ukraine or China wants to annex Taiwan, the United States will have no way to stop them. Great idea. By the way Deepak, those destroyers are currently keeping the sealanes safe against Pirates in the Gulf of Aden. Our navy is the reason why a foreign army has not set foot on American soil (except the Aleutian islands) since 1812.
9. Fully fund social services and take the balance out of the defense and homeland security budgets.
Social services should be fully funded...but not at the expense of our defense. From time immemorial, from Plato to Augustine to John Locke to the present day all great philosophers and political scientists, conservative and liberal all agree that the first responsiblity of the state is to protect its citizens. If it fails to protect its citizens from domestic and/or foreign threats, then what's the point? Too many states have learned this the hard way.
Yes, Deepak, they are naive, fanciful, and downright dangerous. If everyone in the world believed as you did, then your ideas would make sense. But we live in a world full of evil men. A world full of Mugabes, Chavezes, Bin Ladens, and Ahmenajhads.
I'm sure the citizens of Georgia greatly appreciated Russia's help with regards to farming in South Ossetia and Abkazia. What world are you living in Deepak?
Don't pin all your hopes on one man Deepak. You'll be dissapointed. But perhaps, when every country in the world is a free-market democracy, when terrorism loses its luster, when dictators no longer oppress people, when civilization and rule of law spreads to the four corners of the world, maybe then we will all take a look at your ideas. Until then, stick to writing warm and fuzzy columns in glossy new age magazines and making apperances on Oprah.
Guess this guy never heard of Aquinas, just war, and the idea of the "sinful peace."
INSANE!
