As Most Cower In Silence, A Few Take A Stand
Possibly their actions will shame the many to actually DO something
Could you imagine if even half of the USCCB had the guts of these two bishops? I'm tellin' ya, folks... the days of our clerics being clubbed and dragged off to jail are not all that far away.Bishop Would Tell Catholic Hospital to Ignore Barack Obama's FOCA Abortion Bill
by Steven Ertelt
Arlington, VA (LifeNews.com) -- A Catholic bishop in Virginia says he would urge Catholic hospitals to ignore the so-called Freedom of Choice Act if Barack Obama signs it into law. The FOCA bill has been the subject of controversy because it could force Catholic and other private hospitals to do abortions.
Bishop Paul Loverde of the Diocese of Arlington says he wouldn't go as far as other bishops who suggested closing Catholic hospitals but he would refuse to allow them to comply with the FOCA's abortion requirement.
Loverde doesn't have any Catholic hospitals under his purview, but he commented on what he would do if he did.
“I would say, ‘Yeah, I'm not going to close the hospital, you're going to arrest me, go right ahead. You'll have to drag me out, go right ahead. I'm not closing this hospital, we will not perform abortions, and you can go take a flying leap,'" he said, according to a CNS News report.
“It will take away the right of Catholic hospitals not to do abortions, which I suspect would close them,” Loverde said. “It’s quite a title, let me tell you,” Bishop Loverde said of the legislation's title.
“It’s a misnomer, it’s neither free nor choice, so I don't know where they got the name of the act, because it’s just crazy, because it has no freedom, and it has no choice, nobody has a choice for abortion," CNS reporting him telling an audience.
The FOCA bill, which Obama promised Planned Parenthood last year would be the first piece of legislation he would sign, would make unlimited abortions throughout pregnancy the national law.
It would also go further and overturn hundreds of state laws that reduce or limit abortions, including measures that allow Catholic and private medical centers or medical professionals like doctors and nurses to opt out of doing abortions.
The overturning of those laws concerned the nation's Catholic bishops so much that, during their recent national meeting, they talked about the possibility of closing Catholic hospitals if FOCA becomes law to avoid being forced to do abortions.
Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Paprocki of Chicago spoke up about the threats to Catholic health care under the bill.
“It could mean discontinuing obstetrics in our hospitals, and we may need to consider taking the drastic step of closing our Catholic hospitals entirely,” Paprocki said. “It would not be sufficient to withdraw our sponsorship or to sell them to someone who would perform abortions. That would be a morally unacceptable cooperation in evil.”
“I do not think I'm being alarmist in considering such drastic steps,” he said. “We need to respond in a morally appropriate, responsible fashion.” Experts say FOCA could increase abortions as much as 125,000 per year.

Good that will give good witness and force the state to do something (comply or else or nod nod wink wink). Of course the pp crowd would force the issue, but by making them force the issue at best it would be a pyrric victory for them "yeah we won, we closed all the Catholic hospitals... now no one has access to hospitals." that won't play well mainstream.
Cavey,
Even if most of the Bishops stood up, it probably wouldn't do much good. Most of these hospitals are Catholic in Name only & I can guarentee you they would find a way to quickly drop their Catholic connection rather than close or not comply.
Wow. Go Bishop Loverde! (I'm in the Diocese of Arlington.) You know folks will ignore what he says, though, since he doesn't have any Catholic hospitals in his diocese.
Way to go, looks like he'll be joining us in prison, sweet :)
Nice to see a Bishop with a spine.
And there's another thing that could happen: if a Catholic hospital threatens to close, the State might forcibly take it over, citing a compelling reason to provide healthcare...
CLOSE! WHAT! BULL EXCREMENT! You don't close down and run, you face this evil down.
Way to stand up but I am shocked by all the talk of closing or selling. If you do either you are giving up on protecting what innocents you can.
What I want to hear from a Bishop who actually HAS hospitals under his perview is "US Government, you aren't getting one single inch of realestate in this war, matter of fact I might let you keep an acre or two when I am done.
You have the power of the Trinity behind you ACT LIKE IT!!
It kind of makes me think of the movie, "Article 99." I'd help in the siege of a Catholic hospital if it would help. Like Simplex Vir said, "[We] have the power of the Trinity behind [us] ACT LIKE IT!!"
I hope your US bishops work together as a team against evil. I must narrate to you all what the Canadian Bishops did when Humanae Vitae was passed. The Canadian Bishops at the time wrote was is called the Winnipeg report which in short told the Holy Pontiff and Vatican to mind its own buisness. With this one act the Canadian Bishops defied Rome, defied God and in the process have led to the current debacle for Catholics in Canada.
I write this as a warning to The US Catholics and their Bishops, If you all do not stand up and face the evil of the times and fight against it, it will lead to terrible consequences.
