But What Did He REALLY Do?
Other than being in the right place at the right time
WARNING! Harsh language alert. If you're easily offended, I suggest you pass on reading this post.
Our generation's Pearl Harbor... the 9/11 Attacks. We all remember where we were and what we were doing when we first started getting news of the attacks.
One of the moments that'll stay with me forever was the video of Mayor Giuliani on the streets of Lower Manhattan not long after the hits. As Hizzoner was being led by his aides hither and yon, all of a sudden... there was a roar of jet aircraft engines from above.
Needless to say, everyone immediately looked skyward with that "oh shit!" look on their collective faces. And of course, a few people actually gasped out loud what everyone was thinking -- "is it another hijacked plane!!??"
And for anyone who's ever been in the concrete canyons of New York City, if you're street-level, all you're going to see of the sky is just a wee slice. But for a flash of a moment, two jets streaked by... and one of Giuliani's entourage, in a moment that was a scene straight out of a World War II movie, yelled out "THEY'RE OURS!!"
You guessed it. A couple of US Air Force F-15's just arrived and were flying CAP (combat air patrol) over New York City. And what a stirring moment that was.
And then something weird happened. Everyone had a certain look on their faces. To me, it was like everyone was thinking the same thing that I was; "Damn right they're ours. And payback's gonna be a bitch". And there was Rudy, center stage. The focal point... no.... the rallying point for us all.
Now to the gist of my post.
OK, so what did Giuliani actually do? Did he formulate a national strategy to fight Islamo-Terrorism? Did he forge any alliances with friendly nations to battle said Islamo-Terrorists? Did he order the New York City Marine Corps into any battles in various and sundry places throughout the world to kill aformentioned Islamo-Terrorists?
No... he didn't. In essence, Rudy was in the right place at the right time, and that's it.
Time for some straight talk; as long as you didn't piss your pants on national TV, anyone who was mayor of New York at the time would have been looked upon as a hero. Hell, Stewie could have been the mayor at the time. Does that mean he'd be qualified to be president?
Hmmph! Well, I guess this means that he DOES rate to run for president.

Another excellent Blog Caveman. BTW my college rooommates watch that show on TV (unFamily guy) and I thought the Simpsons were bad?!!
Hey Caveman,
First time poster but we know each other real well. Hint:My daughter received her first mantilla from Mrs. Caveman at St. Joes a few months back!(BTW, she's a real sweetheart, like myself, you somehow,'Married Up' also! LOL)
Anyway, your thread topic is one that hits home for me. As a retired NYC police officer who served under Rudy, I want to bang my head against the wall when I see how much play he has gotten out of his 9-11 personna. People tend to forget that this is a man whose career was no more than a punch line on September 10th 2001, due to the train wreck that was his personal life. By this time he'd completely ostracized himself from a police department that once had his full support and arguably won his first term as mayor, through unscrupulously unfair contracts, after our blood, sweat and tears reduced crime to historic lows, thus gaining him a second term. The idea of our Military getting the same sort of treatment from this charlatan makes my skin crawl.
I won't take away from him the role he played on 9-11 as a source of comfort for many of us. He carried himself in a 'Stiff Upper Lip' manner which helped to keep up morale. I was even happy for him that he getting a measure of redemption out of this.
But then a funny thing started to happen on some of the conservative websites that I vfrequent. People started to view his 9-11 behavior, which like you, I viewed as appropriate (not soiling his 'Huggies')and what we should have expected in a time of crisis(as opposed to what we saw from the leadership out of New Orleans after Katrina). To let him parlay his post 9-11 actions into a serious contention for the Presidency of the United States would be like me expecting consideration for the Chief of Department after getting a decent gun collar. "Nice job son, but let's get serious here...". Complete ludicracy. It seems that even some conservatives have some real serious issues when viewing reality.
As far as any Catholic considering to vote for this RINO/CINO, I have just one thing to say. See the 2 doors at the back of the church? One says confessions, the other says exit. Pick one.
I also want to say Cavie, it is a pleasure to serve in the trenches of the 'Holy Wars' that are going on right now in our deanery. You are truly a noble warrior.Thank God we have a great new Bishop, who is slowly, methodically and compassionately making changes that should strengthen Catholicism in our area of the south for years to come. Let's keep up the prayers for him.
Pax Christi!
Tom
Rudy is just another machine politics faker.
To vote for him, my choices would have to be limited to Clinton, Clinton, Hitler, Pol Pot, Moa, Stalin and Bin Ladin.
I'd vote for Ghengis kahn or Atilla the Hun first.
I think that the reason Guiliani gets so much praise is because our society no longer expects people to act like adults. So, when someone does something as simple as being a source of comfort and strength during a crisis, people are surprised and impressed. Guiliani acted in a manner that we should expected of all our leaders.
Due to his stand on abortion, I will not vote for him.
Deb,
Amen! That bumper sticker we had up on the blog for awhile (Catholics Against Rudy) states my position exactly. Someone just asked me today, what if it came down to Rudy vs. Hillary? I said, "I wouldn't vote." (The lesser of two evils is still evil.)
Cavey, so where's the harsh language? My screen didn't bleep out one word of your post!
