I don't think anyone knows who's running things at the USCCB. Case in point. From The Washington Times;
'Compass' review gets pulled
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has withdrawn a positive review of the film "The Golden Compass," after more than a week of criticism about the church's apparent approval of a pro-atheism work.
The review, which had said that the film "can be viewed as an exciting adventure story with, at its core, a traditional struggle between good and evil, and a generalized rejection of authoritarianism," was not available on the USCCB.org Web site last night.
The bishops gave no reason for pulling the review, according to the Catholic News Service.
Pete Vere, a Catholic canon lawyer from Ontario, said last night that several church officials had told him they were concerned that the review by critics Harry Forbes and John Mulderig lacked any context and left the impression the bishops approved of atheist Philip Pullman's work as a whole. These guys are responsible for the salvation of souls, but somehow... SOMEHOW... a glowing review of a pro-atheism flick gets approved. And oddly enough, only after shit hits the fan, then said review gets yanked. Whisky Tango Foxtrot, over?
Call me old-fashioned, but isn't it possible, just possible, that before that wonderful review came out... that just maybe SOMEONE in a position of authority and responsibility would have read AND AUTHORIZED it first?
But that's the really scarey part... someone in a position of authority and responsibility DID read and authorize it first.

As I've said elsewhere, the day will eventually come when the bishops themselves find it intolerable that reviews like this of The Golden Compass or Brokeback Mountain get posted in their name, and then they'll fire their reviewers and link to Stephen Greydamus.
Until then, the reviewers do us the valuable service of demonstrating that that day has not yet come, and the bishops still find the situation acceptable.

As you know, Cavey, General Puller sometimes found out about Lt. F&^%-up's adventures a few days late.
I suspect that there's no difference here. And (I TOLD you so) the Milwaukee-born Exec Director of USCCB did what he had to do.
Flushed it down the drain.

Knowing the USCCB's track record, this is much more than a simple comm foul-up.

i've read numerous instances where individual bishops bemoaned their inability to influance the bureaucrats that actually run the thing.
I suspect that 70% of the problem is in lay employees, who consider themselves to be "church professionals". I also uspect that many of the people who gravitated to sucking at the usccb tit for a living are dissenters who want to change the church.
The solution is simple: Dissolve the USCCB and institute a new conference, being sure to not rehire anyone connected with the old monolithe, except the bishops themselves.
Don't get me started on firing bishops!
