Thank you, Los Angeles Daily News, for bringing this sad tale of woe to light. Here's some of the article; (emphasis mine)
Mahony assaulted near L.A.'s cathedral

Article Last Updated: 12/04/2007 05:56:40 AM PST Cardinal Roger Mahony was physically assaulted by a man enraged by the Catholic Church's sexual-abuse scandal within days of a record settlement with hundreds of victims, the Daily News has learned.
Mahony, 71, revealed the attack during an annual conference in October before hundreds of stunned priests, saying a man assaulted him because of the scandal, according to four priests who attended the conference.
According to Father Sal Pilato, a high school principal who attended the October conference during which Mahony reportedly made the comments, the cardinal said the attack occurred in July near Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral in Los Angeles. The cardinal said he was dropping off letters at a mailbox when a man recognized him, began shouting expletives and knocked him to the ground. "It was shocking because it was an act of violence and it was someone we know and respect,” Father Pilato told the Daily News.
Cardinal Mahony reportedly was telling the priests they all had a price to pay for sexual abuses perpetrated by other clergy. He relayed the story of the assault as an example of the personal toll he's endured, several priests said. Carolina Guevara, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles archdiocese, did not confirm the report. "Whatever conversation might have taken place between the priests and their bishop was a private conversation and not meant to be public," she said.
Cardinal Mahony apparently did not report the assault to police. Los Angeles Police Department officials said they were unaware of any such incident.
The Rev. Joseph Shea, pastor of Holy Family Catholic Church in Glendale, sees Mahony's reaction to the attack as Christ-like. "Like Jesus, we must offer our lives and even suffer for Christ, even for things we didn't do," said Shea, who was also at the convocation. "That's the kind of world you live in," Shea said. "People do some crazy things sometimes." A few thoughts come to mind --
~ Is it just me that finds it somewhat disconcerting that it's the rank and file priests that have to "pay the price" for the perverts and flat-out felons that the good Cardinal protected?
~ This garbage about "the personal toll he's endured" pretty much wants to make me wretch. How about the personal toll of the 500 rape victims that Mahony tried his best to strong-arm into silence?
~ Does Madam Guevara really expect us to believe that what was said at a conference to hundreds of priests somehow qualifies as a "private conversation"? I smell behind-the scenes orchestration. And a bad one at that.
~ My personal favorite... Mahony is "Christ-like". Interesting. Hundreds and hundreds of children raped... Mahony protects the rapists, and somehow, he's "Christ-like". I know what Christ said about people who've done what Mahony's done. Just reference Matthew 18:6
Mahony's obviously done his research on the success of Bill Clinton. Deflect blame - make yourself appear pitiable (a Clintonesque bite of the lower lip would be advantageous) - have a low-level minion publicly try to distance you - have another low-level minion attempt to portray you as the heroic victim.
The quicker Mahony is shit-canned, the better. I hear the monastery at San Quentin has room for one more.

As I've said in other blogs: I have an alibi. If it was me (as if it ever happened) he wouldn't have lived.
Mahoney is a disgrace to his office and should've been anathematized years ago.

They shouldn't, that's bull, and the Cardinal knows it.
MY priests did nothing wrong. They should not be punished.
Vir,
I wrote some stuf down about why I think he's lying about being assauted. Short for: his storey doesn't stand scruiteny very well.
I don't believe a word of this story.
Why didn't he report the attack to the police? Could he know that it is a crime in California to file a false police report?
