Thousands Rally In Rome Over Unmarried Couples Law

ROME (Reuters) - Hundreds of thousands of Italians rallied at a Rome church square on Saturday to protest against a proposed law that would give greater rights to unmarried couples, including gays and lesbians. The draft legislation, which requires parliamentary approval, has divided Italy's ruling coalition, angered the powerful Roman Catholic church and stirred passionate debate.

Waving banners and dancing to tambourines and trumpets, more than 500,000 people poured into the square outside Rome's St. John in Lateran cathedral to support traditional family values based on marriage between a man and a woman. A large cardboard wedding cake with a bride and groom on top stood next to the stage, while nuns, parents and children chanted "Long live the family".

The rally's organisers -- a consortium of largely Catholic groups -- handed out millions of flyers and plastered lampposts and walls with posters in a publicity blitz before the event that ensured a strong turnout.

Not far away at Piazza Navona, hundreds gathered at a counter-demonstration to support rights for gay couples, egged on by bemused tourists. Supporters sang along to popular music, waved Communist flags and held banners like "Family Day - No thanks, Family Gay" and "Benedict XVI ... Century", referring to Pope Benedict, who has exhorted Catholic lawmakers to oppose gay marriage.

Golly gee, I wonder why the American media hasn't picked up on this story? Hmmm....

As a person of Italiano heritage, I suppose i should be insulted by the use of "Eye-Talian" & other stereotypical insults in the title of this post.

But since the article is about my paisans accross the sea actually getting something right, I'll just have Vito rough up your caveman's club a little bit.

As for the media picking it up. If they did, it would probably be to put thero famiglia protesters in the worst possible light. & in a way that would be racist if it wa about any other minorities.

Anyhow: "VIVE la FAMIGLIA!

Al,
Oh no!! When I used that particular phrase, it was more about poking fun at those here in this particular area of the country I live in, than anything against Italians. Didn't you see my "How To Speak Southern" post?

Yeah, Italiano's are pronounced "Eye-Talians" around here. And for the life of me, I still don't get how "Are-ish" somehow translates to "Irish".

Oh well... GO ARE-ISH!!!!

Long live separation of church and state! If you want a real marriage go to the church. If you want a pretend one, go to the state. If I had my way, the state would butt out of ALL sacraments and EVERYONE would have civil unions as a domestic form of corporation. Then ALL expenses would be deductible and we could stop taxing diapers and baby food. OK?

You ranting social conservatives don't even realize how much families get screwed by allowing the feds to poke their noses into our marriages and tax everything, OK? And with VatII separating church and state, well, that should include sacraments out of state!

Civil unions for all, get the state OUT of my marriage.

You just had to, didn't ya WC? Well, if there's anything you might have learned during your painfully short visit to The Lair, it's that there are consequences for your actions.

So you want to promote a sinful and depraved lifestyle, 'eh? No problem. But don't think for a minute that my blog will be a platform for such.

I certainly hope you said what you had to say on your last comment. Because that's exactly what it is... your last.

I'll pray for your conversion to Catholicism.

VSC:

WC did not advocate gay unions he advocated that the state not participate in sacraments.

Gay Activists do not like that idea at all. They want to use the civil sacrament to push an agenda. That agenda involves forcing heterosexuals to affirm gay relationships, and ending heteronormative culture.

That is not a new idea. Nor is it a particularly uncatholic one. But then you are a caveman, and it might be a bit advanced for you. The interference of the state to bless your marriage can actually be warped to attack a church sacrament.

We all know what WC was getting at. A blind man can see it.

Only a fool refutes the obvious.

But you being a Modernist Revisionist, it might be a bit advanced for you.

BTW, how do you know that WC is a "he"? All that Winnie The Pooh is somewhat chick-ish. You must normally confuse genders.
