Church to Become a Mosque
Kneelers for pray rugs; a sign of the times?

Our Lady Help of Christians church in Detroit, Michigan, a parish church for 83 years, will move out after the last Mass this Sunday so the moslems can move in and turn the place into a mosque. The church isn't being sold to pay off the victims of clergy pederasty, as is so often the case these days. Nope, despite what some parishioners say to the contrary, the diocese is selling the church to heathens because they say too many members have left the city and moved to the suburbs.

I wonder. Do you think any of the loss in congregants was because they were looking for a Catholic Church that obeyed the General Instruction for the Roman Missal and had a crucifix at the altar instead of the "touchdown Jesus"?

Yep. That could be it. Although my husband refers to it as the "Buddy Jesus," but I like "touchdown Jesus," too.

Maybe some nicer stained glass would work, as well. Nothing like swirls of the 70s to make one go elsewhere.

Hmmm... and once when I was in Pittsburgh, I ate in a restaurant that had once been a Catholic Church - and it had it's own brewery inside. But I think a church to become a mosque is worse.

We all know that orthodoxy begets vocations, now, how do we convince those heterdox priests otherwise?

NEVER would have happened in that old, strict, cobb-web filled pre-Vatican II Church that actually celebrated the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in.....LATIN. Dear God, No!

Actually, I don't think that's the reason, because we in the suburbs here have to put up with that "novelty" still. As far as I know, it's because of the race riots and "white flight" in general. The auto industry isn't helping either.

Not everything is because of a poor Mass, you know. In this particular case, would that it would have been the reason, the only reason! Then I could enjoy a good Mass here in metro Detroit. As everywhere, they're awefully thin on the ground.

There are a few good Masses in metro Detroit, Peter. Where in the area are you? I can recommend good parishes that do the Novus Ordo in English, and one in Latin, plus there's a Tridentine if you don't mind going to midtown (by Wayne State).

I know about St. Josaphat's and St. Joseph's, but I live in Rochester so it's a bit of a drive. I attend St. Irenaeus right now, but my cousins go to Ss. Cyril and Methodius which is a very nice Mass. If you have any other recommendations please let me know!
