I Admit Defeat
This Caveman is jumpin' on that bandwagon

The current John Paul The Great phenomenon is just too much for the me battle alone. A College named John Paul The Great; various Catholic schools named John Paul The Great; the phrase John Paul The Great in numerous writings from various and sundry priests and bishops; websites and blogs out the butt that state John Paul The Great, etc, etc. I'm simply overwhelmed.

I've asked many a time just what it was that made Pope John Paul "Great". I never got a straight answer.

I've stated that prior to JPII, there were 264 legitimate pontiffs and only 2 of them had the title "The Great" bestowed upon them. The obvious question from here is; what made JPII "greater" than the other 262? Yet again, I never got a straight answer.

The best answer I could get for rationalizing "The Great" was "it's the will of the people". Well, I'm one of the people. And John Paul The Great it is.

Oh, and by the way, seeing that I'm "one of the people"... everyone else is "The Great" from now on. Former Altar Boy The Great, PreVatII The Great, Conde The Great, Dymphna The Great, Fidei Defensor The Great, Jeff The Great, Fugger The Great, Der Tommissar Der Great, Rhonda The Great, Digi The Great, Paul Just This Guy You Know The Great, Crescat The Great, Rick Da Great, Gillibrand The Great, Jay The Great, Amy The Great, my pet collie Megan The Great, the breakfast I just are was Great, et cetera, et cetera... and others too numerous to mention The Great.

ADDENDUM ---

Because:

a. Christine asked
b. I stole Advocatus Militaris' "puffs of smoke" idea from him
c. I was braindead and forgot to add Carlton

they are all to be from here on out, known as (insert name here) The Great

ADDENDUM II ---

Because:
a. I don't want Scarlette to be mucho in debt, she is hereby The Great

"Jay The Great"

Cool. But Mrs. Anderson has already proclaimed me "Jay The Magnificent", "Jay The Stellar", and, simply, "The Man"!

Which, I suppose, is another way of saying I'm "Great".

I'm bummed. My husband says I'm great, but I didn't get affirmed here.

I thought that someone had answered you about JPII, though. Wasn't that here? I thought it had to do with his writings, his help in the fall of Communism, the love that the Church (and even those not in the Church) have for him...

But maybe I'd see your point more if you made ME great, too.

Christine,

You fall under and others too numerous to mention. See, your GREAT!

But nonethess, all the things you mentioned were mediocre at best.

1. His writings don't account for much when he's promptly ignored (and he does nothing about it).

2. Communism never fell. Remember China, North Korea, Cuba, etc?

His love for The Church, although admirable, doesn't rate The Great moniker. As I posed on the initial posting;

there were 264 legitimate pontiffs and only 2 of them had the title "The Great" bestowed upon them. The obvious question from here is; what made JPII "greater" than the other 262?

Yet again, I never got a straight answer.

Aw, shucks, thanks, but I'm not great. I'm still just a Regular Guy.

Weren't Thomas Aquinas' writings largely ignored in his own day? 100 years from now, people will still be finding new nuggets of wisdom in JPII's writings that they hadn't realized before.

Does the fall of Soviet communism count for nothing?

Is he one of the top-three popes of all time? I couldn't say. But think he's "great", even if there should have been others called "the great" as well.

But the rest y'all can be great; I'd have told anybody who asked what a great guy you are, Caveman.

JPII played a very real role in my personal conversion to the Church. His example as a Christian was simply overwhelming, and I see him as a tremendous example of Christian truth, lived large.

Carlton. The Great.

Tommissar Tommissar, Tommissar uber alles!

I always wondered why St. Peter wasn't the Great. I mean, getting crucified upside down is pretty hard-core.

I've gone on my own and named him St. Peter the Nifty.

She wouldn't think that if she knew either of us. We both own weed-eaters!

I'm Scarlette The Greatest, right caveman? That's why you didn't put me in with the average "greats" right? You can make a seperate post about me. That's cool.

Yeah, fugger, at least YOU made the list.
I'm going to spend the rest of the day with the sad knowledge that I am not great at all.

I'm depressed now. I'll have to going on a shopping binge.

Hooray! I'm great! I'm great!

Now, if only I could get more than 50 hits a day on my blog...

But I'm still great!

*happy dance*

Seriously, though, perhaps his greatness will be realized later. Maybe it is too soon to proclaim him as such, but we shall see, won't we?

Now I don't have to wear the "I suck" t-shirt I bought while shopping today.

Hmmm. Jay removed a post. Maybe he couldn't make a joke about Scarlette's t-shirt work within the bounds of decency?

God knows I wouldn't try.

Although the language was a bit rough, my intention was not to be lewd.
I didn't read Jay's comment. I can see now how that could be twisted into something indecent. I could also see Paul being the one to point it out.
