The Quotable Chesterton
Everything WE do pales in comparison
"If there were no God, there would be no atheists."
"I had to become a Catholic because its the only church that does not see a contradiction between a pint, a pipe and a pew."
"There are those who hate Christianity and call their hatred an all-embracing love for all religions."
"The reformer is always right about what is wrong. He is generally wrong about what is right."
"Progress should mean that we are always changing the world to fit the vision; instead we are always changing the vision."
"Tradition means giving votes to the most obscure of all classes, our ancestors. It is the democracy of the dead. Tradition refuses to submit to that arrogant oligarchy who merely happen to be walking around."
"The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him."
"Women are the only realists; their whole object in life is to pit their realism against the extravagant, excessive, and occasionally drunken idealism of men."
"Marriage is a duel to the death which no man of honor should decline."
"The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting; it has been found difficult and left untried."
"These are the days when the Christian is expected to praise every creed except his own."
[No society can survive the socialist] fallacy that there is an absolutely unlimited number of inspired officials and an absolutely unlimited amount of money to pay them."
"Art, like morality, consists of drawing the line somewhere."
"Religious liberty might be supposed to mean that everybody is free to discuss religion. In practice it means that hardly anybody is allowed to mention it."
"A strange fanaticism fills our time: the fanatical hatred of morality, especially of Christian morality."
"The sort of man who admires Italian art while despising Italian religion is a tourist and a cad."
"Every man who will not have softening of the heart must at least have softening of the brain."
“What we dread most … is a maze with no center. That is why atheism is only a nightmare.”

A line list of quotations.
All as relevent today (if not more so) then when they were first said!
Fidei,
You're always a step ahead of me on these blogs. You certainly are getting sharp in finding the finest (Catholic) blogs online!
Enjoy it, because once you graduate you will find your discretionary time decreasing.
Good luck in your finals!
Non,
Great quotes!
Chesteron is fantastic. One of my favourites:
On the emancipation of women: Twenty million young women rose to their feet with the cry "We will not be dictated to":
And proceeded to become stenographers.
Catharina, you'll have to ask the Caveman, I am meerly a fan of this blog and avid poster. I am not at all very learned on Chesterton. Though I plan on reading whatever I can get my hands on by him this summer!
"Religious liberty might be supposed to mean that everybody is free to discuss religion. In practice it means that hardly anybody is allowed to mention it." - Autobiography, 1937
Non sum dignus beat me to it.
I just finished the autobiography after recently finding a 1st printing at an antique book sale here in Atlanta. The beggining of the first chapter is not to be missed!!!
