EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Rep. Patrick J. Kennedy may have to make a decision between his job as a lawmaker and his membership, "his authentic membership," in the Roman Catholic Church, Rhode Island's Catholic bishop said Tuesday morning.
The Most Rev. Thomas J. Tobin made the comment during an interview with talk-show host Buddy Cianci on WPRO-AM.
"If he cannot abide by the teaching of this church, not just this one but others and ... what it means to be a Catholic ... maybe he should find another fine Christian denomination where he can be more comfortable," the bishop said.

I agree that Kennedy is going against his Church and because his disagreements with the Church and his bisop are in public, that grave scandal on Kennedy's part is the result. I even agree that Kennedy is a political hack, and maybe even a first class jerk! I do not agree, however, that a Catholic bishop ought to tell an erring Catholic laymen to go find a more "comfortable" Church. Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus applies. He should be inviting this jerk to reform his life, not compound his sins with schism and heresy.
+Tobin already invited Patches to reform his life, several times. Patches basically responded with the ol' one-finger salute. Patches is scandalizing the faithful with his insistence that he's Catholic even though he's a baby-murder monomaniac. +Tobin is looking out for actual *Catholics* by telling Patches to PUSMO.

It looks to me like the good bishop is just asking Paddy to formalize what he's already made obvious. That whole free will thang.

You are right about that! I would only like to reiterate that an episcopal call for a public metanoia on Kennedy's part makes his (Kennedy) likely subsequent refusal an effective teaching moment for the Catholic faithful.
The good Bishop fired a few salvos on Wed night aginst all those "Catholic" politicians who refuse to defend life. He also refused to equate the death penalty with abortion making it clear that the Catholic Church does allow for it under certain circumstances while abortion is intrinsicly evil.
The bishop has precedent in St Paul, who recommended that a sinner be kicked out of the community so that he would suffer the punishments of the world. Isn't that in effect what Bishop Tobin has said?
Also, the Bishop could have put it another way to Kennedy: He could have told him that if he wanted to become Catholic, then he would be happy to give him personal instruction for an hour each week, until he might be ready for either Confirmation if his was not valid, or Confession once he has corrected his persistent sins. A bishop can condition admission any way he wants. If the applicant does not agree, then they can have their lawyers take it up the ladder in Rome.
Kennedy apparently was unable to dominate Bishop Tobin, and thus has put himself in a showcase spot. Hopefully enough bishops work with this so that they can put down the unholy uprising of the ungodly politicians who call themselves Catholic.
