(CNSNews.com) - Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I) told CNSNews.com that the Catholic Church is doing nothing but fanning “the flames of dissent and discord” by taking the position that it will oppose the health-care reform bill under consideration in Congress unless it is amended to explicitly prohibit funding of abortion.
“I can’t understand for the life of me how the Catholic Church could be against the biggest social justice issue of our time, where the very dignity of the human person is being respected by the fact that we’re caring and giving health care to the human person--that right now we have 50 million people who are uninsured,” Kennedy told CNSNews.com when asked about a letter the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) had sent to members of Congress stating the bishops' position on abortion funding in the health-care bill.

The former (if he ever was one) Patrick Kennedy is concerned about 50 million people, but what about the 100 million+ that never made the lucky sperm club to be born into this world?
Social justice or salvation? Clearly we (corporately) seem to have chosen some pale imitation of social justice in lieu of salvation.

I live in Rhode Island and am part of the Diocesan Human Life Guild. I thought you would enjoy Bishop Tobin's response to that idiot Kennedy. I give kudos to the Bishop for calling him ignorant, irresponible and a dissapointment.

( PROVIDENCE , R.I. )-The Most Rev. Thomas J. Tobin, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence, today issued the following statement in response to a Cybercast News Service article that reported: Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I) told CNSNews.com that the Catholic Church is doing nothing but fanning “the flames of dissent and discord” by taking the position that it will oppose the health-care reform bill under consideration in Congress unless it is amended to explicitly prohibit funding of abortion.
“Congressman Patrick Kennedy’s statement about the Catholic Church’s position on health care reform is irresponsible and ignorant of the facts. But the Congressman is correct in stating that “he can’t understand.” He got that part right.
As I wrote to Congressman Kennedy and other members of the Rhode Island Congressional Delegation recently, the Bishops of the United States are indeed in favor of comprehensive health care reform and have been for many years. But we are adamantly opposed to health care legislation that threatens the life of unborn children, requires taxpayers to pay for abortion, rations health care, or compromises the conscience of individuals.
Congressman Kennedy continues to be a disappointment to the Catholic Church and to the citizens of the State of Rhode Island . I believe the Congressman owes us an apology for his irresponsible comments. It is my fervent hope and prayer that he will find a way to provide more effective and morally responsible leadership for our state.”

Well put, Bishop Tobin. Sticks it to Kennedy by addressing both his competency and his Catholicity.
If suddenly we have scores more millions on the insurance list, then where are the additional doctors to treat them going to come from ?
Kennedy should redefine the "biggest social justice issue" as abortion, and then second as stopping the gay movement, and finally to consider that a major social justice issue is for Congress to stop preventing the addition of sufficient numbers of doctors.
But he claims that he cannot comprehend this stuff: So why do his constituents elect someone who cannot comprehend anything so simple?
Kennedy does not ask why, but simply states that it is beyond his capacity. I'll wager that he got through Harvard with his family cheat sheets (the green ones with pictures of presidents on them).
Bob, while I like what Bishop Tobin said, what else has he done to make it clear to Kennedy he is not a Catholic in good standing.

Good point. Bishop Tobin hasn't done much else. I would love to see him tell Kennedy not to present himself for communion.
