Poor, poor Robin. He was an adult when he volunteered to join the Armed Forces. He volunteered to serve 2 years after the 9/11 attacks. He volunteered when he knew damn good and well that he would be on his way to a combat zone.
But now this scumbag is a hero to some because he wimped out on the vow he made to serve his country. 12 months in the brig wasn't enough for this punk sack of shit.

Robin Long, released from Miramar Marine Corps Air Station, said the hardest part of his 12 months in the brig was being away from his young son. He had fled to Canada in opposition to the Iraq war.
Reporting from San Diego -- Army deserter and antiwar activist Robin Long said Friday that the most difficult part of his 12 months behind bars was being away from his young son. (Poor baby. Being separated is one of the many prices you pay when you volunteer to serve your country. Tough shit, asshole.)
Long, 25, released Thursday from the brig at Miramar Marine Corps Air Station, said he missed celebrating Christmas and other special occasions with his 3-year-old son, Ocean. (What the hell kinda hippie, faggoty assed-name is "Ocean"? Mom and dad are hippies, so the kid has to pay the price. Why didn't they just name this kid "Kick My Ass Now"?)
Meeting reporters outside the Veterans Museum and Memorial Center in San Diego, Long said he wished every morning that he could see his son running toward him and hear his voice.
"Instead I woke up to reveille and I saw high fences and razor wire," said Long, from Boise, Idaho. "This punishment was for having a moral opposition to the Iraq war." (No, asshole. that's the punishment for being a cowardly deserter.)
Long said he plans to enroll in a school in San Francisco to learn massage therapy. (Why am I not surprised?)

1 question I would love to ask him. If he is an anti-war activist, why in the theological place of eternal damnation did he ever enlist in the 1st place? & 2 years after 9/11 to boot, after the war started.
I can only assume he was stoned at the time. It doesn't say but why do I feel it is safe to assume he is from California?

those guards are stone professional warriors, not murderers. It was up to the court-martial to sentence him to hanging, the firing squad, or ... (sigh) a year in the brig. Not the guards.

This describes my late Dad. During WWII, He served on a submarine chaser in the Carribean and North Atlantic. Sub chasers were called the "Splinter Navy" and, as you have stated, were referred to as wooden ships with iron men. After the European war ended, he was transferred to a tin can off Okinawa to get ready for the eventual invasion of Japan.
Yes, I was joking. Besides, those Marines can be stone cold professionals, yet many of those *$*&^ incarcerated will not exactly experience a country club atmosphere! *evil grin*
