My Favorite Catholic Chick From Virginia Hits Another One Outta The ParkDymphna's blinding common sense
I know I'm a few days beyond the power curve with this one, but it's a powerful posting that I couldn't pass up ---
When Teddy Kennedy dies he'll probably be surrounded by family and friends. A priest, if not the cardinal will come to his bedside and give him Last Rites. Someone will croon French, (Rose Kennedy spoke fluent French and so did her son, JFK) or perhaps even Gaelic to him as he slips away. Later thousands will view the body in both Boston and DC and despite Church rules there will be eulogy after eulogy at the funeral. If the family asks for it, Danny Boy will be sung and the cardinal, his favorite priest and the Papal Nuncio will probably be co-celebrants. It will be one heck of a send off.
When I was a child Teddy ran a half hearted campaign for president. My father, a devoted Democrat said he'd vote for him but he'd never win. "Why", I asked. " A place called Chapaquidick," my father explained. A girl was killed accidentally in a car Ted was driving and although he'd always be king in Massachusetts, a dead girl was just too much for the rest of the country. My father said no more about the matter and I went back to playing with my Barbies.
When Teddy passes beyond the veil anyone who mentions Mary Jo's name will be sneered at as a meanie so I'll say it now and I'll say how sad it was that no-one was there to give the poor silly miss Last Rites or to hold her in their arms as she slipped away and no cardinal held her mother and father's hands at her funeral.

As Ted lays dying, and all those family and dignitaries surround him, I wonder if Mary Jo will be there too -- and the only one who will be able to see her is Ted.
She's waiting for him...
I was just about an adult (late teens) when this happened. People wondered why her parents were so silent about this. Some had thought the parents were bought off. I dunno. If it were my daughter I would have been screaming bloody murder. Perhaps they were silent because they were threatned??? OK, a little paranoia on my part.
No, not paranoia, Adeodatus. Either Mary Jo's parents had drank so much of the Kennedy Kool-aid by then that it seemed like no big deal, or they were bought off, or they were threatened. My guess is the last alternative. Old Joe the Womanizer and Putrid Anti-Semite started out as a bootlegger during Prohibition, remember, and the connections between the Kennedys and the mob were always more than just rumors.
I think they were silent becuase they were just emotionally crushed and perhaps because they were told that Mary Jo's name would be trashed if they put up a fuss.
I think Dymphna has a good point and the most likely explanation. That said, I too think that Old Joe was a first rate SOB.
I'd put A LOT of money on the trashing of Mary Jo's name if they spoke out against Teddy boy. The whole lot of the Kennedys are evil people. There was a study recently comparing the similarities of Politicians to criminals. The Kennedys prove that thesis.
I'm glad after reading these comments that other people feel the way I do about Ted Kennedy. I never have had any respect for him and regardless of what the great so call liberal fruitcake President says, I have no use for the Kennedys. I think the best of all of them was Joan Kennedy and they put her through he*l.
