This beautiful upper-middle class slice o' suburbia is actually a Catholic church. Holy Cross parish - Durham, NC. 
Remember the Alamo, but try to forget the sorry excuse for architecture they did at St. Luke the Evangelist - Raleigh, NC. 
This modern art monstrosity is Our Lady of Lourdes - Raleigh, NC. 
The Sacred Warehouse (AKA St. Brendan the Navigator - Shallote, NC).
County government building? Guess again. St Jude's - Hampstead, NC.

You are not the first to suggest that many Catholic Churches look like coal mines.
They strike me as looking like very pleasant motels!

Dare we hope that the insides are breathtakingly reverent?
Please consider a contest. Because do I have a doosie in an "upper middle class' well-heeled neighborhood near me.
(Why was it that poor folk could produce beautiful church buildings for all these centuries and we today in North America have dumbed down versions of 'community centers'?
I have been appointed to the building committee in my Parish, St Catherine of Siena, Clarksville VA, just over the border.
I am not the only orthodox (small o)on the committee, but I am struck by the lack of foundation in my fellows. There is no Catholicity.
Where can I find some pictures of good Catholic Churches and dog ugly ones?
I live in NC too. And actually retired from the MC in Jacksonville.
I know all of these Churches except Shallotte.
