Marines Give Obama The Cold Shoulder
Respectful, but unimpressed
Here's a bit of the article from ABC News; (Emphasis mine)Obama Visits Marine Corps Base for Christmas
President-elect Obama stopped by the Marine Corps base in Hawaii Kaneche Bay (do they mean Kaneohe Bay MCAS?) where servicemen and -women were eating Christmas dinner in Kailua Thursday evening.
As Obama entered the room, it was absent of the regular fanfare of cheering and clapping. The diners were polite, staying seated at their respective tables and waited for the president-elect to come to them to stand up.
The president-elect spent about an hour with the troops. Obama transition aides say that Obama did not eat with the uniformed men and women -- he ate at his beach home with his family and friends Christmas night.

I suppose if he was in office they would have stood up because he would then be their "Commander in Chief".
But, I can't say that I blame them for the type of reception he got from them at this point. Everyone knows this visit was for "appearances" only.
What does surprize me is that the media didn't make it look like they were worshipping at his feet. After all (heavy sarcasm)"THE OBAMESSIAH".
"Sounds like a very festive occasion," he said, sarcastically.
Well, he isn't the CIC yet, so why would they do more than that? Marines are ALWAYS respectful, even respectful of a terrorist's need to be dead.... Thank God. Too be Mr. Obama doesn't feel the same way.
I should think a Marine, being one of the higher life forms on earth, would know that respect is earned. JMHO.
They remained seated as was proper. As only the president-elect he holds no position of authority. Once he is sworn in you will see the Marines snap to. They know how to show respect for the office if not the man.
You mean his 5,000 square foot, valued at $300,000 beach front rental property? And did you hear that when there was a power outage for several hours due to a storm, BO wouldn't let the generators (on site for just that possibility) because he wanted to "rough it" like the rest of the O`ahu plebians?
OM,
As a retired Marine, I know exactly what you mean. The point I was trying to stress was that there was no Obagasm that he's so use to.
Take my word for it... if the Marines present were the least bit impressed, they would have done more than stand when the Senator came to each specific table.
Granted it was a "press opportunity," but I'll (grudginly) give the guy credit for showing up there.
HRC would not have showed up at all.
As a former Marine I will tell you that they would jump in front of a bullet for Obama as the President. They serve the office not the man. They know that.
However I caution all of you on something you may not know about Marines. They know better than almost any other service the definition of a lawful order. They take an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the U.S. So if a devildog was ever asked to do things to the American citizenry due to the order of a Commander in Chief or any other upline authority there would be some serious fireworks. I don't think the upline authority is going to feel too good afterwords either.
Many like to think that Marines are just highly trained lunatic fighters, close to being the bezerkers of medievil times. That is not correct as Marines are and continue to be some of the most intellegent and clear thinkers especially under pressure. This is all the way down to the Private First Class ranks of the enlisted.
My drill instructor used to tell us in boot camp that God had a special place in his heart for Marines. I believe that to this day!
SV: Is there really such a think as a FORMER Marine? I've never met one... ;)
TCN,
Oh yeah! Plenty of Former Marines around!
There just is no such thing as an "Ex"-Marine. After all... once a Marine, always a Marine!
VSC,
I think there are two ex-Marines... Lee Harvey Oswald and John Murtha. One murdered the president the other spit on "Semper Fi" when he publicly accused Marines of war crimes without waiting for the outcome of their trial and has consistently refused to apologize.
OM,
True enough!
As he did from Jan 20, 1993-Jan. 20, 2001, my Beloved (aka, Gunny Beloved, USMC [Ret.]) will be making his stoic clenched-jaw face effective Jan 20, 2009 every time he watches the news and sees his fellow Marines saluting the CIC as he steps off of Air Force One. "A necessary but not enjoyable duty," as he puts it.
Should this new CIC have the gall to do the same smirky, cavalier, half-ass salute in return (as did a certain draft-dodging CIC back in the 90's), we could see the Beloved's very scary Blue Eyes of Cold Flame return.
Not good. Not good at all.
SV said, "My drill instructor used to tell us in boot camp that God had a special place in his heart for Marines.
which is probably why...Only God looks down on a Marine, everyone else looks up.
