Just yesterday I posted the article concerning Father Newman of St Mary's (Greenville, SC) who had the audacity to actually come out and defend orthodox Catholic teaching. *GASP!!!* The horrors!!

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- The administrator of the Diocese of Charleston, S.C., said a pastor who told his parishioners they should refrain from receiving holy Communion if they voted for President-elect Barack Obama did not "adequately reflect the Catholic Church's teaching" on abortion and conscience.
"Any statements or comments to the contrary are repudiated," Msgr. Martin T. Laughlin said in a Nov. 14 statement.
Father Jay Scott Newman of St. Mary's Church in Greenville, S.C., said in a letter to his parishioners that Catholics who voted for Obama, who supports legalized abortion, would have to be reconciled with God through the sacrament of penance before faithfully receiving Communion again. The letter was published on the front page of the parish bulletin Nov. 8-9.
Msgr. Laughlin said that Father Newman's comments "diverted the church's clear teaching on abortion" by pulling it into the "partisan political arena."
Quoting the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Msgr. Laughlin said that Christ gives everyone "the freedom to explore our own conscience and to make our own decisions while adhering to the law of God and the teachings of the faith."
"Therefore, if a person has formed his or her conscience well, he or she should not be denied Communion, nor be told to go to confession before receiving Communion," he said.
The diocesan administrator also urged Catholics throughout South Carolina to unite to support Obama and other elected officials "with a view to influencing policy in favor of the protection of the unborn child." He invited people to pray for the new president and his administration as they take office Jan. 20.
In his letter, Father Newman said members of his parish who voted for Obama had placed themselves "outside of the full communion of Christ's church and under the judgment of divine law."
"Persons in this condition should not receive holy Communion until and unless they are reconciled to God in the sacrament of penance, lest they eat and drink their own condemnation," he wrote.
The priest called Obama "the most radical pro-abortion politician ever to serve in the United States Senate or to run for president."
Father Newman's letter also reminded parishioners to pray for the president-elect and "to cooperate with him whenever conscience does not bind us otherwise."
"Let us hope and pray that the responsibilities of the presidency and the grace of God will awaken in the conscience of this extraordinarily gifted man an awareness that the unholy slaughter of children in this nation is the greatest threat to the peace and security of the United States and constitutes a clear and present danger to the common good," Father Newman wrote.
Calls made to Father Newman Nov. 14 were not returned. Remember gang... 2+2=5, left is right, up is down, Obama is the new messiah. So saith the Administrator for the Diocese of Charleston.

Everyone should flood that priest's voicemail with explicit messages of support! SHAME on the administrator of the Diocese of Charleston! Now, maybe the Vatican will take notice of what a pitiful state that diocese is in and send them a worthy bishop.
This all started in the 60's when all the priests told women to "follow their conscience" concerning birth control. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge. The pigeons have come home to roost....
This doesn't surprise me, at all. When the good Father's announcement was made public, I wondered how long it would be before one of the successors of Judas Iscariot slapped him down.
How can a person honestly claim to have a well-formed, i.e.consistent with Church doctrine, conscience and support a guy who is willing to kill babies that, through the grace of God, survive a botched abortion?

Dear Caveman,
I you don't like the Roman protestant church here in the US, why don't you try a Byzantine Catholic parish? We have our own bishops and dioceses (eparchies) which are vastly more traditional that what you find in the post-Vatican II protestantized Roman church.

I do not speak for the Caveness but I think he would have my back on this we ain't goin' anywhere. We will fight for our church! People much better than us have endured far worse than us so running away would be traitorous and I am afraid condemnation of our souls!

I have a deep respect for our Eastern Rite Catholic Churches. I've attened Melkite, Ukrainian, and Chaldean Catholic Liturgies in the past, and hope to again in the future. After all, we all are loyal to The Bishop of Rome!
If there were an Eastern Rite Catholic parish in the earea, I probably would attend on at least a semi-regular basis.
You know...a Chaldean or Melkite Liturgy celebrated in the ancient Aramaic, the Ukrainian celebrated in ancient Slavonic, or the Traditional Mass celebrated in Latin are all things of beauty.
But I seem to recall reading somewhere that Canon Law prohibits "changing Rites" (for lack of a better phrase).
As my buddy Vir Simplex so eloquently pointed out, I gotta stick with fighting to clean-up the Latin Rite!

You ever heard of St. Athanasius? He was was the greatest champion of Catholic belief on the subject of the Incarnation that the Church has ever known and while still alive earned the title of "Father of Orthodoxy." Although I don't think there was yet a Western and an Eastern Church yet within the umbrella of the univeral Roman Catholic Church, St. Athanasius would very likely have been a Coptic. Nevertheless, the didn't stay home in Alexandria and keep his own flock loyal to the teachings of the Church. No, he took on most of the bishops of his day, was even excommunicated for awhile, until he was proven right. The point being, regardless of what rite one commonly practices, we are all members of the Catholic Church and, once confirmed, are warriors for the Church Militant. The gift of fortitude isn't for ostriches.

You are partially correct. A Catholic belongs to the rite into which he/she was baptized. Although one is free to worship at any Catholic church, regardless of rite, you cannot transfer into another rite without your bishop's permission. (Not sure whether the "receiving" bishop would have to also concur.)

WHAT PART of "while adhering to the law of God and the teachings of the faith" does the Msgr. NOT GET?!? Or is supporting unrestricted abortion now "a matter of conscience?"
Leo, Cavey, et al: you must indeed obtain permission to switch rites, and once you do, you cannot "come back" without an arduous canon-legal process.

The sound you hear in response to this line is that of Ss Thomas More, Thomas`a Beckett, John Fisher, Stanslaus, John the Baptist & many an OT prophet turning over in their graves.
I respect the "stay and fight" sentiment, but when you get to be an old geezer and have one foot in the grave, sometimes it's just too painful. I am aware of no canon law requiring permission before changing rites. In any event, simply attending a Byzantine Rite parish is perfectly acceptable. The Sacrament of the Eucharist is the Body and Blood of the Lord in either rite, is it not?
