Here's some of the article from LifeSiteNews.com; (Emphasis mine)Massachusetts Bishops Vacillate on Defense of Marriage Petition Campaign
Spokesman says Cardinal O'Malley signed petition "in a moment of weakness"
BOSTON, October 10, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Massachusetts Catholic Conference (MCC), which represents the Catholic bishops of Massachusetts, has offered no support for the restoration of the state's 1913 marriage law, which would prevent nonresident homosexuals from going to Massachusetts to be "married" in accordance with the state's "gay marriage" provisions.
Recent actions by the hierarchy and its representatives are raising further questions about the leadership's true sentiments on the matter.
The latest controversy began when Sean O'Malley, the Cardinal Archbishop of Boston, was approached at a public event asking for his signature endorsing the restoration of the law.
Although O'Malley signed the petition, members of his own entourage attempted to snatch the sheet away. Now, the Boston Archdiocese, in conjunction with the MCC, has issued a statement implying that signatures cannot be collected on Church property.
Camenker (of the pro-family organization MassResistance) also says that he was told that Cardinal O'Malley signed the petition "in a moment of weakness" and that it was not a public act.

This strickes me as an instance of the functionaries of a long mis-run and dissedent diocese making an end run around their Bishop.
If standing up for faithful citizenship is a moment of weakness, we're in trouble.
And, if Cdl O'Malley doesn't squash these roaches like the insects they are--I will have no respect for him.
The Massachusetts Catholic Conference was made ineffectual to speak out on social issues important to Catholics in MA when Cardinal Sean named Ed Saunders, a PR hack as its head...
Gutless and spineless. Hang 'em high (Spiritually, of course).
Spineless blobs of jello.
Cardinal O'Malley is a nice man but since when has "nice" accopmplished anything, stood up for anything or had the guts to preach the Word?
