This, This, And This Is OK...
This isn't
If you want this as your rear view mirror ornament, that's OK.
If you'd prefer this as your rear view mirror ornament, that's OK too.
Even if you'd like this as your rear view mirror ornament,
that's most certainly OK.
But THIS is never, never, NEVER to be mistaken as an ornament
under any circumstances. Remember, the Rosary is a Spiritual Weapon... not something we hang off our rear-view mirror.
This isn't
that's most certainly OK.
under any circumstances.

Brother, I disagree.
Benedictines wear them as belts.
I find that mine is an excellent reminder of the Right Things when I need it most.
And I know it'll be there the next time I get caught in the midst of a tornado in my car; which happened to me once.
I keep my rosary on my rearview mirror because I do use it on occasion during my commute, because it serves as a reminder to refrain from roadrage, and because I think its a very visible sign of my catholicism to others.
I don't lok at it as a trinket, because I know that it is a sacramental, but is it really so bad to keep it in a visible spot, ready for use? My intention isn't to have it there for decoration.
I get more aggravated when I see "celebrities" wearing them as "jewelry!"
Not to mention everyday people doing the same thing!
Dr. Eric
PS I used to keep a St. Christopher Medal hanging from my rear view mirror since I wore a Miraculous Medal but wanted his intercession while driving.
I totally agree! Good Post! I see people who are good Catholics and I don't believe they realize that these beads are not decoration and it is very disrespectful as well. I keep a pair in my car but not hanging in my rear view window
What's worse is when people wear it as jewelry. I wear mine around my neck under my shirt for practical purposes. I saw a boy today at the middle school where I teach wearing his out above his clothing. When I asked him where he got his rosary he gave me a blank look. I indicated it and he said (and I kid you not) "Ohh...is that what this is? I got it at the dime store 'cause it looked pimp". I barely resisted the urge to fail him on the spot. I weep for the future.
What if we actually like to pray a rosary while we drive...? Is that acceptable?
Alexander,
Imagine if we lived in a proper world where, once the young lad said the words, "Ohh...is that what this is? I got it at the dime store 'cause it looked pimp" it would have been completely acceptable to pull out your 1911 (.45 semi-auto pistol for you non-military types) and shot the little bastard right between the running lights?
God bless and pass the ammo.---Semper Fi
I keep mine on my rearview mirror and let it hang loose. See, I live in New Mexico and we're still working on these newfangled things called "roads".
Ever live in a place where the directions include, "If the river is flowing, turn around and go. . ."?
In any event, the crucifix on the rosary bounces around and whacks me regularly in the face. I consider this to be an excellent reminder to prayer and also a great penitential offering.
It's like being one of Los Hermanos Penitentes but without paying the membership dues.
I don't think our Blessed Virgin would condone murder on her behalf but a sound thrashing might change his behavior and teach him what Soldier of Christ really means!
I say the rosary while driving sometimes, but I keep it in the ash tray (don't panic - I don't smoke; no ashes or anything else in there). If you are trying to finger the beads while it's over your rear view mirror, please stay off the freeway!
I agree. There are a million different things we can dangle from our mirrors that scream "I'm Catholic" to witness our faith. If you use it in your car keep it handy, by all means. I keep mine in the little compartment where sunglasses go & pray while sitting in traffic "Lord please help me slam on my brakes for the idiot bastard tailgating me. Keep my middle finger in it's place.Amen."
Hammer,
That wasn't me that made the .45 comment. That was my goomba PreVat2.
CC,
I do the same thing!!!!!
Heh.
You wouldn't want to tell my wife that the Rosary hanging over her mirror is a "decoration."
You'd learn a new use for the Weapon of Mary.
My wife's use of the Rosary is as an icon of her Faith and a reminder of how to pray--and when (always.)
Actually, they sell auto rosaries now - I got one for my sister. It works like an abacus - five beads on the top, ten on the bottom, with a crucifix behind it. You stick it to the dash in front of the instrument panel. Personally I find it a little awkward, and I don't know if she prays it in the car - a single-decade rosary makes more sense to me for that purpose. But it's certainly less ostentatious than hanging it off the rearview...
And for the kid who "thought it looked pimp"...I pray he was being flippant. On second thought, I don't think I pray that. I think I just pray, period.
Well, this post has given me something to think about. I do have the Catholic bumper stickers and one does encourage praying the Rosary. Maybe I don't need to hang one from the mirror. Hm....there should be a bumper sticker made that reads, "Take the Rosary off your mirror and pray it!"
What nonsense! If you can have Mary on the dash, you can have her rosary on your rear-view mirror. There is no disrespect. It is a sign to the world; it is a reminder to the driver; it is an incentive to pray.
