Didn't Cardinal Mahoney pretty much make it a point to pick up where Cardinal Bernardin left off? Wasn't Mahoney a Bernardin disciple?
If so, I think an explanation for why Cardinal Mahoney is the way he is is that he is under the same influence that Cardinal Bernadin was under when he was bishop of Chicago. The chief exorcist out of Rome is now saying that he has first hand knowledge and has witnessed for more than thirty years Satan's influence on the human element of the Church. Right up to the curia. And then we know that Malachi Martin in "Windswept House" modeled a particular character attached to the occult on Cardinal Bernadin. And then of course there are the wreckovations Cardinal Bernadin did to the Chicago cathedral which according to a recent documentary contains countless symbols of the devil.
So, I am just saying. If you want to know where Mahoney is, just look where he came from and who formed him as a bishop.
Bernardin, Weaklend, Mahoney, they are all so incredibly far gone that there must be some super-natural force working on them. And sadly, they all rejected Christ in one form or another and so they are probably much more susceptible to Satan's temptations than they otherwise would have been had the stayed true to Christ's Church.
Just a thought. I personally can't fathom any other explanation unless they are/were just mentally deranged. Any sane person with a conscience would not be able to live out such a contradictory existence.

As much as I sympathize with your POV, I do not think we should ever rely on a novel, however allegedly thinly veiled (I have read it.), to make conclusions about individuals.
I don't know if Cardinal Bernardin was Cardinal Mahony's mentor. It doesn't really matter to me, one way or the other, because I find Cardinal Mahony's tenure as the Los Angeles' archdiocesan Ordinary totally objectionable.
If I would exercise the temerity to blame one or a couple of ecclesiastical persons for what we are facing today, I would land that blame on the desk of the Popes, the current one and the previous ones going back to Pope Paul VI, and maybe even Pope John XXIII. The buck has to stop somewhere!
I shook Cdl Mahony's hand once; not a whole lot of character there in my opinion.

Has anyone ever done a drug/alcohol exploration into these characters? Maybe they really are insane.
I went to one of those religious education conferences. They are all full of dissenters, self-promoters speaking bad doctrine to the audience of religious educators. I was hard pressed to find any workshop that was doctrinally sound. And the extravangazas that were the Masses! Light shows with loud music and barefoot women and men wafting bowls of incense around. I witnessed one shaven headed gay man dancer making eyes at the Cardinal. The dressed for success organizer, a religious sister with an expensive haircut, made a number of quips about the docility of the Cardinal, "He sits where we tell him to sit." That pretty much sums it up.
Just read a news item that says a bishop on one of the Vatican courts claims that a Confessor is limited to only requesting a pedo priest turn himself in.
Why I doubt this bishop: The confessor can assign a penance which requires the priest to resign or whatever before absolution is given.
Allowing such a priest to continue in a grave occasion for sin is a mortal sin. If the confessor does not stop the priest, and he can do it by refusing absolution, then he becomes complicit in the mortal sin.
I wonder to what extent the Vatican needs to be exorcised.

CINO's mask their dissent and obstinancy with compassion. And compassion uberalles exonerates them of all moral responsibility. Compassion uberalles is what was behind the hosting of a very special fund raiser held at the LA Cathedral's Conference Room in February of 2007.
The fundraiser was for AIDS clinics in Mexico that're sponsored by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. The event was titled “Amigos y Amantes” (Friends and Lovers). Yes, it's going where you think it's going.
There was an auction at the event that showcased the homoerotic art of "emerging Latino artists," Miguel Angel Reyes, Joey Terrill among others. Yup, right in the Cardinal's own backyard; with his blessing. How extremely sad.
When a bishop is consecrated, he is given his mitre. The "horns" represent the OT & NT. A bishop, wearing the mitre on his head, is "armed with the horns of both testaments" and will appear "terrible to the opponents of truth." So a bishop has to be an adversary to those who oppose truth. How does Mahony reconcile that? Only G-d knows.
By the way, Eric Stoltz, a gay activist and web designer, was ordained permanent deacon by Cardinal Mahony in 2004. Stolz designed the current LA Archdiocese's website.
St. Thomas Becket, pray for Cardinal Mahony. And please pray for his successor. May he clean up the mess Majony is leaving, and not add to the trash heap. Many souls are at stake. Amen.
