Ermey is a self made idiot. But he does remind me of the booming voice over the loudspeaker while we were standing on the footprints at USMCRD SD in '65. We learned at that moment that not only was the Marine Corps now our mother and father, sister and brother, uncle and aunt, cousin, but also our God. Eight weeks later when we had our first few hours of base liberty, a couple of buddies bought the record at the px, just to see if the "immortal" line was on it. I recall that it was not there. Guess the booming voice did a little bit of ad libbing. But Ermey has gone the way of most all those who take the name of the Lord in vain ... Didn't he run a number dissing Blessed Mary Ever Virgin in the movie Full Metal Jacket? He represents one of the reasons the Marine Corps is so lethal, but at the same time he represents a mindless and souless lethality. Just who in Hollywood is he really lined up with? I mean to say that I admire the machismo of Comrade Vladimir Putin, but I wouldn't put up with his ideology. Ermey is sort of in the same category: Difference is that with Putin, you know where he stands; with Ermey one can smell a hint of treachery.
I gotta disagree with you JLS. I just thought it was funny. No grand conspiracy, just a well put "Oh hell, we're about to die, so gird up you loins" moments. Nothing more.
But thanks for your comments... and keep 'em coming.
Ermey has become a character actor, and a good one IMHO although gratuitous lines dissing the BVM seriously detract from any storyline of a film.
However this character would be ripe for fragging. Officers talk too much and when they do speak they ought to say something which could be easily mistaken for being intelligent.
Imagine Don John of Austria giving a speech like that to the galley crews at Lepanto?
They'd chuck him overboard! Loud mouths will get ya killed.
Suzelle, I don't know if you've ever seen this movie before, but the character Ermey plays is exactly what the Firebase needed.
What you calll 'loudmouth', others would qualify as 'fire-breathing'. After 20 years in the Marine Corps, it's been my experience that loudmouths have nothing to back-up their yelling and screaming. Fire-breathers, on the other hand, possess a rather large amount of integrity and personal courage. Much like the character Ermey played.
But it's all academic, seeing this movie is essentially a comic book come to life.
Keep the comments coming!
PS, I would think the crews of the Christian fleet would have chucked the dope smokin' Army Captain (in the movie in question) overboard way before they would have dared looked cross-eyed at Sgt Maj Hafner (Eremey's character).
I'm not Suzelle though my 'puter insists that I am. Anyway I haven't seen the movie in question but I've enjoyed Ermey's persona on the shows of his which I have seen.
But this out take bothers me.
The fire breathers I've met (in the army) bloody well walked on water and the platoon wouldn't hesitate to follow. Sgt Maj Hafner reminds me more of a constipated gander. In the context of the whole movie I guess it would be humorous, but in the real world I think a trooper's piss-off-edness would be more efficiently directed towards the task at hand rather than a Top who is likely giving away the beans.
Instinctively one knows the best odds of survival is sticking with a character like Ermey. OK, it's down on my face and 25 (might take a while to crank 'em out though).
JLS, If he were an Obamaniac, it wouldn't shock me... seeing he's been in Hollywood for so long. He wouldn't be the first (or last) individual who I admired, who ended up being a scumbag. *Mel Gibson, are you listening?*
Not sure if I just hit the send button and then edited to this better version:
Well, I just deleted another long winded tome. I think my best shot here is to kick back and chillax for a while ... take my dog up in the canyon and get him ready for quail opener. I met Mel's recruiting priest at a dinner a few years ago, and realized that I'd prefer to stay away from the fenceline of Roman Catholicism. Yeah, too many of my friends are not Catholic ... it just seems there ought to be a way to convert all these heathens, so many of whom were responsible for keeping this nation somewhat free.
At the chillax my buddies just about barbecued me over the campfire, when I told them I dissed Ermey. They also ran a few of his scenes in the movie "Firebase Gloria". But they also said that it is difficult to find the movie. Looks like my own firebase has been over run.

Well, on Ermey's website recently it looked like he was a total champion for Obama. That's really what is bothering me.

Maybe I'd best watch the movie to see what the heck I'm talking about.
Suzelle,
Sgt Maj Hafner isn't real. The seige of Firebase Gloria never happened. It's just a movie.
JLS,
He's an Obamaniac? He very well may be a better actor than I gave him credit for. Thanks for the heads-up.
Vir Speluncae Catholicus, I'll check my facts.
